Hello,

I'm very new to proper photography but have been reading the posts and every magazine I can find plus just using my camera. I recently bought myself a D200 plus lenses and my wife a D40x. I also bought an SB800 and SB600.

I was under the impression that I could use the two flashes together on the D200 so that I could get some more creative lighting but I have read the manual for the SB800 and D200 and another book on the D200 but I cannot figure it out.

Does anyone know how I can do this? Do I need more equipment? (I was under the impression that the SB800 would act as the master and fire the SB600).

I was looking at using the SB600 as a side light for some practice with portraits.

You can set the D200 to act as a master in the Shooting/Flash menu. Under the Flash option you have Manual, TTL and Commander. Choose Commander mode and set the options from there. You will need to pop up the onboard flash which will trigger the two flashes. I personally wouldnt have the flash on camera as it produces flat images. Set both to one side and adjust accordingly.

Enjoy.

Thanks, that's one step nearer. I have set the D200 to command mode but neither of the flashes flash. Any idea what to do next.

Well just got it working and took a couple of pictures! Then I spent 5 minutes trying to work out how to get the SB600 back to normal mode but the batteries ran out before I could do it. The same with the SB800 although I found a reset on the SB800 (I think) so basically I still don't know how to do it. I will have to try again later!
