I reckon they are a bit overcooked for the subject matter, the contrast is too drastic and creates harsh dark areas on the people's features.

Only my twopenneth, I just thinking when shooting people the skin tones need to be preserved to retain their features.
 
First one.
But if there was a lighter version than that, I would go for it.

I think the first one does work better.
But overall, maybe not the best processing on either pics.
