Winter Sun - Egypt any good?

Yes
Looking for some winter sun just after Xmas. Most places like turkey are just a bit too chilly (18-20), canaries are a possibility but seen some good deals for Egypt (like sharm el sheikh).

Had anyone been there? Not my normal holiday, looks a bit too Benidorm like for me but teens will like the 26c temps and water slides in the hotels.

If you’re open to other ideas look at Dubai/Abu Dhabi. Warm, clean, quiet & relatively cost effective for a holiday.

Thanks. Came out at quite a bit more than Egypt and this is not our main holiday, bit of a whim. Although it does look nicer.

Check the Governments Travel Advice: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/egypt

There was a general warning a few days ago about travel to certain countries, with Egypt being one of them in case the conflict in the middle east escalates and spills over into other countries. It seems the main tourist areas are considered safe. I think the only thng to think about is possible travel disruption if there are more missile attacks with planes in the region being diverted.

We went to Egypt many years ago and had a brilliant time, but we were in Luxor doing the history stuff - hotel was some modern place with pools and enough 'English' foods to keep fussy eaters happy but there was also enough local foods to keep us happy. A trip to see the pyramids, a Nile cruise, and of course the Valley of the kings made it so much more than just a winter sun holiday - totally amazing if that's the sort of thing that you'd like to do..
Obviously the safety side of things is a big factor given what is happening in the world at the moment.

Where it lists the areas of Egypt applicable to this aspect of their 'warning'

One of the best, reasonable cost, locations at this time of year is south Tenerife. Los Cristianos. Current Nighttime temp. 19ºC Daytime 25º. That's official temps but we found the temperatures a couple of degrees warmer.

We're going to Los Gigantes soon and then again in February. Both with Tui. Los Gigantes (Tui Blue hotel) is adults only. Minimum age 16. It's a very quiet village on the sea so you might want somewhere with a bit more life so Los Cristianos where we're gin g in June. Our friends go there regularly. They've just returned from Los Gantes .They put us on to those hotels. Now we're regulars.

Los Cristianos. Arona Gran hotel. It's also adults only. Minimum age 16. They are excellent hotels.

Tripadvisor. If you go to Los Gigantes get a seaview room and they are at the back of the hotel. The front overlooks the village . We prefer the seaview.

Arona Gran hotel

Take a look at both locations using Google Earth.I always do that before booking anywhere.

So the green areas are ok? These are where the two resorts I am looking at.

It's a long time since I went to Sharm el Sheikh but my summary would be: great for diving (you really want a liveaboard), awesome for snorkelling, fine for lying by a pool in a busy luxury hotel. So-so for everything else. A significant portion of the northern hemisphere seems to go there whenever there's a chill in the air.

Periodically it rains and whole villages get washed into the sea - this comes as a surprise every single time it happens. Nealy missed my plane home because it rained when I was in the desert near there and the roads evaporated.

I suspect it's got busier and more constantly surprised by extreme weather in the many years since I was there.

Mainland Spain is nice this time of year, they are having an awful time of it at the moment though

S Africa - overnight 12 or 13 hour flight - very little "jet lag" - inexpensive when you get there - a sensational country

Cape Verde Islands will be warm. We went in January a couple of years back and the weather was great.
My niece and her husband went there in the summer and saids it was really quiet. Not much to do annd described it as just "alright" We wree thinking of going there but she changed our mind.

Agreed , there’s not an awful lot to see there. We just wanted a week of sun, beach and complete relaxation after a hectic year, it was perfect for that.

I've just put right my typos.. That's what rushing does for you ...:D

They were delayed on departure for a long time because of a sandstorm out of the Sahara . Quite a regular thing,it seems. We saw the same phenomena in Los Gigantes last February but not to same extent. I thought it was mist but a waiter said it was desert dust.
