Having Plusnet FTTP installed on Monday. The supplied Home Hub 2 is not Wireless 6 so will not be able to take full advantage of the 500 Mb speeds, so at sometime I will want to upgrade it. Recommendations please? Range will not be an issue as my existing Tp-link already reaches everywhere I need without boosters.

That surprises me! Are they still installing equipment?

I too also use Plusnet as my provider of internet services since about 2005 and they are a good company but I have had a warning that things are to change. Were you aware that they are part of the BT network, and now 'EE' as well. (Oddly my router is almost identical to the BT one used by a neighbour). I have been told by them that sometime in the near future that they will be discontinuing my E Mail facility and will have to transfer my business to either BT or EE. I will not be able to take my E mail address with me.

If anyone knows differently I would like to know what is going on because Plusnet either don't know themselves, or keeping things very close to their chest. EE is my 'phone provider and when I asked them, they were 'unable' to help either.

Of course, they have been part of BT for some while. Some EE “salesmen” claim that all broadband will soon be going over to them (and have been doing so for over 2 years!) Plusnet are still very much alive and promoting themselves quite heavily on TV and radio. Always had great customer service from them. Certainly the latest routers they provide are common across the group and simply rebadged. They also host my domain, but it’s easy enough to transfer domains across ISPs. BTW, they themselves do not install anything. That is all done by Openreach. Indeed, a few weeks ago I had a doorstep visit from some EE people pushing FTTP (it’s only just been extended from the cabinets to the poles) but when I said I was with Plusnet they said that I would be just as well staying with them as they wouldn’t cross-sell within the group.

Told by whom? Because below you seem to say that no one at PN answered your question.....

I recently renewed our PN FTTC contract for another 2 years (IIRC we have been with PN since around 2003 and got a very good deal from them until May 2026)

NB we also use PN email addresses.

During the phone discussions with them, I was told by one agent that I could not keep my landline.......I emphatically told him we wanted to keep the landline (another more helpful agent ~ the first one I spoke to did not argue this point)

To cut to the chase, at no time do I recall mentioned any changes to the service but do get that when BT/Openreach cease the analogue phone service with the 100% switchover to digital voice there will be some sort of changes going on in regard to landline usage. Now, the new contract extends beyond the (slightly vague) date of switch to digital voice......so will cross that bridge when it comes.

I had ceased my voice service a year or so ago as the only calls we got on it were scams! And it’s true that at the moment anyway you can only have fibre for data, not voice.

I can only repeat what I have been told, like a lot of things in this day and age no one seems to know exactly what is going on. I have already started to transfer my E mail from Plusnet to Proton, This is a fully encrypted, free E mail service based in I think Switzerland and have had good service from them so far.

In all fairness to @Rodinal , I was initially told the same, by a salesman in an EE shop who possibly had another agenda! Subsequent enquiries strongly suggested this was misinformation, as tends to happen these days. Neither Openreach engineers nor senior Plusnet managers have any knowledge of Plusnet's imminent demise.

That's why we need to know if what he was told carries any weight at all.

It might be worth have a look at https://www.snbforums.com/forums/wireless-buying-advice.28/ to see what's currently in favour. I've been using an Asus RT-AX86U for the last three years, albeit with Merlin firmware, and I have no reason to change. Oh, and I'm on Plusnet FTTC.
Thanks - actually an Asus AX 1800 router came up positively in my initial research.

Right, here goes. As I said I have been with Plus Net since the early 2000's and very happy with their service although they do seem to have gaps in the information that is passed out to customers - me being one of them. I had been told that they were changing the way they worked and the way I read their information was that they were terminating the provision of the internet service and being reabsorbed into the BT and now the EE fold as well. What they didn't make clear and after I spoke to them this morning is they are stopping the installation of part wire/part fibre Broadband line and NOT stopping it altogether, a quite important point that was not made clear to me.
My current contract with them has a long time to run but when that becomes due I will still be able to maintain my land line and number by plugging my land line into my internet router. Again not previously mentioned.

As a result of this missing snippet of original information, when I went to the EE shop to solve a problem which could not be done via their help line, I asked about the changes that were to come. They had an offer on about changing over the EE for my broadband service and was told mistakenly this could be done with no detriment to me or even a mention of the land line being changed or the land lines being removed.
It also seems now that EE were touting for business and pirating other/new customers from a company that was essentially part of the same organisation, but under a different name. I mentioned it to PlusNet and they were already aware, but what they were doing about it was never disclosed.

So it seems I will be able to keep my landline (in name only) which for me I feel is essential because if in the event the EE phone goes down I will have no means of communication should there be an emergency.

When I last renewed a PlusNet contract, I was also told that I could not have a "proper" land line. I started searching for alternative providers, and told PlusNet so and, lo and behold, I was suddenly able to renew with a landline plus FTTC for a better price!

However, this is part pf an industry-wide change, initially supposed to be complete by the end of next year. I think this article by Age UK is a good explainer: https://www.ageuk.org.uk/informatio...nsumer-issues/changes-to-landline-telephones/ (it suggests it now might not be complete until the start of 2027).

I am now less worried about this than I was in the past. Having a phone that won't do emergency calls in a power cut (think floods, fire etc) is a significant problem, but as long as we also have a mobile phone (that doesn't rely on WiFi Calling!), the danger is mitigated.

Just an update on this. Openreach have now installed my FTTP and I have plugged in the Home Hub 2 Plusnet sent - for now. Initial speed tests done purely on a wireless connection show 470Mps down and 70Mps up, on a 500Mps package. Time will tell how reliable this hub is, but for now it reaches all corners of my realm (3 bed semi).

Sounds good :)

AFAIK at this stage FTTP is not available unless as a special order that carries a very high premium.

We are happily stuck with FTTC until/when FTTP arrives as "available"....,.....though digital voice may well land on us before then!

No-one round here - a quiet small town in the Yorkshire Dales (pop. 2500] - were expecting FTTP until the arrival of a large swarm of contractors pulling fibre from the cabinets to the tops of telegraph poles. Even 6 months ago the official stance when questioned was that there were no plans for it “for the foreseeable future”.

We have FTTP available from Openreach in some areas (mine, fortunately) and Giganet in others. I'm currently on FTTC and didn't move to FTTP at my last renewal because we need the landline as Mrs S refuses to have a mobile. I'm waiting to see what happens when analogue telephony is withdrawn. One complication for me if I want to move is that my domain is registered through Plus.

My domain also is held with Plusnet, which is one reason why I have stayed with them since its Pre-Plusnet days. The other is that they have been very reliable. However, it is possible to transfer a domain to another provider. Just a pain to do so if not necessary.

Re: transferring domains
AFAIK all companies now do such transfers free of charge. The very first one I wanted to transfer because of abysmal service held me to ransom, requiring a fee to transfer out! :(
Once bitten, twice shy I made sure to ask namesco (at the time) whether they charged release fees, and the answer was no.

IIRC the process has always been straightforward but once moved to new 'name servers' it can take around 48-72 hours for the change to propagate.

PS @Stephen L was "pre Plusnet days" Force9 ?

The funny thing is some of the small rural towns here have Openreach FTTP before we do in the city (only Cityfibre FTTP) however it's a much bigger improvement for those who have slow unreliable xDSL connections compared to the mostly decent 80/20 connections FTTC offers in the city.

I use an Eero 6 plus their extenders (for a mesh) and it's been fast and flawless. The app is particularly useful for monitoring connections etc. I'm not sure how good it is with non-Eros hardware though.

I've also got an ASUS TUF AX5400 which might be overkill, but it handles full wireless for VR without any issues, so pretty fast.
