Hi all, it's been such a long time since I was last on the site!

So, I'm toying with the idea of upgrading my kit but nothing set in stone yet... I've been rather taken with the idea of the new Nikon Z6 II to have alongside my old Nikon D5100. My husband was looking at going halves on a finance plan for me for Christmas, but I really don't want to take the mickey, if I can keep the costs as low as I can. The body and adaptor would be essential but stretching to a lens as well could be a push too far.

Obviously my old camera is a DX not FX and although the Nikon site states you can attach the F Mount lenses, will there be a horrendous problem with images of I do so?

My lens selection is:

Nikkor AF-S 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 G DX
Nikkor AF-S 55-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 G ED DX
Nikkor AF-S 10-24mm 1:3.5-4.5 G ED DX
Nikkor AF-S 50mm 1:1.8 G
Sigma 105mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro
Sigma 150-500mm f5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM

My main interest is nature / landscape photography but I also take the normal family snaps and have a little 1 year old who I would like to try taking some decent photos of when she isn't moving about like greased lightning, ha ha. I am a complete amateur still as I've just not picked the camera up in so long. Will I still get decent photos with my lenses above on the new camera, if I get it...

The Dx lenses will vignette on a full frame body to some extent. On Nikon Fx DSLRs, the user can opt to shoot in Dx mode which will automatically crop in to the image to remove the vignette or they can opt to do the cropping themselves in PP.
The 50, 105 and 150-500 are all (AFAIK) full frame so you'll have a few options. In Dx mode, the other 3 lenses will give the same angle of view as your current D5100 and if you decide to do the cropping yourself, you may well get slightly wider angles from them. In the mean time, start saving for a 24-120 f/4 (or save for longer for a 24-70 f/2.8) or the native Z mount equivalent.

You will be able to use your Nikon lenses on the Z6 using the ftz adapter.
Sigma claim their lenses are compatible.

The camera should automatically default to DX mode when you attach the lens.
Be aware your Images will be 10MP as opposed to 24MP if you used an FX lens.
Longer term, if you are going to splash the cash on a Z6II it makes sense for future lenses purchases to be Nikon Z FX.

This video explains a little more (boring intro though).

Or maybe if you can afford it, a secondhand Z7 as with those lenses, even in DX mode, you will still end up with a 20mp image (like a D500).

Sorry for the radio silence - I've had a real job getting into my account after forgetting the new password I set... couldn't get the reset email for some reason either so big thanks to Chris from TP for getting me back in!

Some food for thought there, either way, all the cameras will be an upgrade to my current camera anyway. It's a shame about the MP for the DX lenses although would the actual image quality be much different to my current camera given the age of the technology etc (forgive me if that sounds stupid, I'm fairly ignorant of some of the stats in actual practice)?

I suppose looking at actual photographic ability and whether a bigger spec camera would just be wasted on me, a Z50 would be a good compromise between an upgrade where I can still use current lenses and cost. I think some of the difficulty is I'm not just into one specific type of photography, so getting a good all rounder is important to me.

I know it's small but part of the reason I looked to the mark 2 Z6 is memory card options. I'd have to get new cards for the mark 1 Z6 / Z7 and they aren't exactly pennies, I'm only working part time and with a little girl too, the "consumables" cost would mount up pretty quick by the time I bought a couple. Pity photography isn't a cheap hobby, ha ha! Thank god for credit cards or purchase on credit. Never really had to rely on it when I was working full time but it's changed since reducing hours.

The D5100 is almost 10 year old technology so a more modern larger sensor will be significantly better in terms of dynamic range, high ISO noise handling etc., even at the reduced MP count that using Dx lenses offer.

Consider yourself lucky that you're buying cards now - GB cards are now cheaper than MP ones were not too many years ago!

I had a nikon D90 and considered the Z6 and Z7 but eventually went with the Z50. I am a learner still and the Z50 suited me better with my selection of lenses (where most were DX but a couple were Fx). I'm happy with it so far.

I came across my invoice for a D200 purchased in 2006. I bought 2 x 1GB Compact Flash cards - £39.00 each :)

If I were buying a full-frame Z mount body with those lenses, I'd get the kit with 24-70 and mount adapter. With the FX lenses you already have, you'd be covered except at the very wide end, where the 10-24 will still be pretty wide even with the DX crop.

What sort of things are you photographing? Is it / would it be good for fast moving birds / in flight photos? Also, what is the multiple exposure feature like (if you have used it)? I'd probably try using it to take photos of the Red Arrows during a display too at some point.

Would you believe I've had all the emails come through. I've got hoards of password reset ones filling my inbox. Wonder why they were so delayed... Bizzare.
There was an issue with "our" mail server, run by a 3rd party.
Hence me manually setting your account.
Its all sorted now, and the mails that were backed up have been delivered.
