Canon EOS R Series Cameras

I had the older Sigma before I bought the Canon ef-s, it’s the only lens I ever sent back.
I’ve only ever owned 2 lenses I was disappointed with, that one and the 17-40L
But if the mirrorless version is better, that’d be an answer.
The Sigma Contemporary range are best leap forward in quality and spec, and the Art series is their version of Canon L and Sony GM.

The Sigma 85 Art is one of the best portrait lenses IMO, and only just behind the canon 85mm L

There are plenty of YouTube videos on Sigma Art lenses

I have a Sigma Art 35mm, and I absolutely love it.
But I was unaware of the later 18-50 for mirrorless

I have canon EF fit sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 dc for my 7Dii and which is now mounted on my R7 via ER-EF adapter. I also own a Sony A6600 with a Sigma 18-50 f2.8 and it is a very light, sharp lens and this is the lens I would like for RF mount for APSC.

The canon efs 17-55 IMO is an OK lens, though I would rate both my Sigmas above the canon efs 17-55

I have both the Sigma 17-70mm dc and the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 and would say the Canon lens is better than the the Sigma in everything bar the little bit of extra length and it's closer focusing ability. The Sigma is slightly smaller but the Canon's IQ is superior.

That surprises me as my experience is the opposite !
From people I have chatted to the Sigma's sometimes need to set up via the Sigma dock to an individual camera, i.e front and rear focusing.

My Sigma 18-50 f2.8 Sony e mount is a great little sharp lens ! !

I would love to try out a canon ef-s 17-55 f2.8 on my Eos 7Dii and R7

My first gripe with the R5 - buffer filling using e-shutter and high speed shooting for fast moving event. There was so much going on that even with two camera bodies and a light touch on the shutter, a couple of times I was waiting as both cameras were writing to buffer. That said the results were epic. It’s the first time the show has been on since 2020 due to corona.

I've had that problem many times - and whats more frustrating is that when you've shot some pictures etc, you can't switch to and start video recording either. The delays are ridiculous - yet the Z7 and every other camera I've got and had is fine. Frustrating to the max!

it is so easy to fill the buffer on the R5, it’s I guess it’s just the large file size
if I’m expecting to take a lot of shots in quick succession I use cRAW it helps , I haven’t been able to see any quality difference between cRAW and normal RAW

That would have been smart. Thanks for the tip! I’ll do that next time.

That’s a good tip. I’ll try CRAW myself and if I can’t see any difference I’ll use that permanently! Thank you!

Anybody here upgraded from R6 to R6II? If yes, are you happy, is it a substantial change for better or a small one? I want to upgrade from R6 to something with a higher resolution and I'm looking at either R6II, R5 or the new Sony (which would mean I would have to sell all my Canon stuff and get the Sony compatible versions).

I also mainly shoot with a medium format Fuji Gfx100s and treat the full frame system as an additional gear for stuff I don't shoot with Fuji.

I'm also Fuji and Canon - GFX100 and R5 - both amazing at different things, GFX in the studio and landscape, R5 for events and sports.

does anyone use their R6ii for football, i am thinking of upgrading my Canon dx.I use a Canon dxii with 70-200 and was thinking the R6ii on my 400mm.Will it be a big enough upgrade

R50 could be a good little holiday camera ! !
But worse than the M series cameras, no interesting lenses, so you end up with a tiny convenient camera with either inferior lenses or fantastic but oversized lenses.
Will be made worse by Canons new attitude to 3rd party lenses (no Sigma 56mm).
My perfect travel kit would be:
A FF canon version of the Fuji xpro with a couple of pancake lenses and the 85mm.

In 12 months...drop to near £1k to £1200...Then get a 35mm/1.8....that would be amazing I think.
I'm planning on using the mirrorless for portraits (pretty much exclusively), I'm looking forward to adapting some of the EF lenses like the 135 f2, 85 1.2 and maybe the 200 f2 with more accuracy and less time worrying about focusing errors. I find it a great way to be more creative in my photography with features like eye af.

R8 looks really good. Although no ibis?? I personally think anything north of a grand should have ibis now.

Unfortunately or fortunately (because their value of dropped), I sold all my L-Glass and moved to Sony 6 years ago now...how time flies....

But I miss the layout of the Canon Body and colours of the files.

Fair point,...

I own Canon 7Dii, R7, Sony NEX5R ( a great little camera ) and Sony A6600 with sigma 18-50 f2.8 & Godox speedlite

The Sony's are my travel / holiday cameras as they are small, light and while I use the A6600 and my wife loves using the even smaller NEX5R because it will fit in her handbag !.
The Sony & Sigma e mount lenses are light, small and pretty good in APSC format.

I bought the M5 to use as a travel camera and never loved it. I’d previously flirted with a little Fuji (which filled the brief better but I didn’t want to run 2 systems).

There’s a part of me that still believes that if I started again tomorrow I’d be a Fuji crop shooter rather than canon FF.

I think the R8 would be great for product and landscape shoots as the lack of IBIS is not a an issue, and I hoping this is cheap FF camera !
Launch price of £1700 so could see this available sub £1500 before long

The R8 looks very interesting. I've been shooting the RP for 2 years and would be interested as an upgrade for many of the upgraded features as it's basically an R6Mk2 in a smaller body.
I'd certainly be interested in trying one to see if it's a worthwhile upgrade. It's a shame it's so much more expensive than the RP at £1700.

it is a cheap FF camera and if you have EF L lenses ( as long as you have the EF - RF Adapter ) it is a sound choice
The R8 will be a big improvement over the RP as the menu features are the same as R6ii like focus stacking !

Any R5 shooters here who were previously Nikon Z6/Z7 users?

The only Canon I ever had was an EOS 30D way back in 2006. I've been a mostly Nikon user since (with a Fuji overlap).

I'm mainly a landscape shooter but starting to get more into bird photography, so I'm using my (mostly) Z7 in a way that I'm not used to, and getting to grips with different focus modes and subject tracking. From what I read, the R5 has far superior specs for bird/wildlife photography than than the Z7II, never mind my Z7.

Landscape photography will remain my first love and the one feature that I often really miss on my Nikon bodies is a fully articulating screen - for those low-level scenarios, particularly as I got used to it with my Fuji XT-3. Rumour has it that the Z8, due out in 2023, will have the same articulating screen as the Z9 (good) but will also come with 61mp (bad.... way more than I want or need). Z9 has everything I need feature wise, including a sensible MP count, but it's a beast for someone like me who already has a bad back and who likes to hike....

So (if not already apparent) I'm thinking of jumping systems. The R5 seems to tick all the boxes for me. I know the R5II is also due soon but it's also rumoured to be jumping to 60MP+ and I really don't want those big files.

I'd be interested in hearing views, especially from anyone else who made the jump from Nikon Z to Canon RF.

Cheers.

The tumbleweed would suggest that no-one here has made this particular jump.... ;)

the spec of the R5 is still pretty good 3 years on from its launch and though there is not major improvement on the R5ii it will be an amazing bit of kit over the competition !
I like to think I won't be tempted. Of course, I will be tempted haha. Now I'm used to having matched cameras, it would mean two upgrades.

I've not made the jump. R5 is great, but if I was invested in Nikon with flashes, lenses, batteries and so on I'd probably stick with Nikon.

I think there wouldn’t be too many who’ve made the jump from Nikon mirrorless to canon mirrorless. Id say it’s unusual to move from mirrorless to another mirrorless manufacturer.

I went from Nikon D810 to sony mirrorless to canon mirrorless. The main reasons being I found sony mirrorless bodies quite small so wanted something I could hold easier, and the smaller size and weight of RF lenses like the 70-200 f4 really appealed to me. At the time I wasn’t too invested in Sony so made sense to change before I was.

ive currently got a R6 which is good. I’d love a R5 but it doesn’t seem sensible to buy a used R5 at present when the R5ii will likely be released at some point this year.

Cheers Rob.

Part of me would be excited about learning the new tech but I suspect that would soon change to frustration out in the field when nothing works the way I'm used to ...

I've been thinking about this further since I posted. If the Z8 arrives with the rumoured 60MP+ resolution, I don't actually have to use it. DX mode would give me the crop factor plus a still useful file size. Plus the fully articulated screen I want and maybe a subject tracking that is as good the Canon RF series.

Probably best that I wait to see the actual Z8 spec before making that proposed leap.

Yes. I’ve still got the Z7 and Z6 and R5 and RP. Problem is, the Z7 handles brilliantly and I love it, but the end result with the R5 (better AF and much better slow no video options) make it a total no brainer. But I am not getting rid of the Z7 and I live the way it handles and usen every so often with the EF lens via adapter

Quick question about the R7, can you adjust the fsp for each drive mode like you can with the 1DXmii? I'm sure I saw a vid where it was mentioned but I'm damned if I can find such a thing in the menus.
