The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I noticed a issue on my viltrox 16mm f1.8, when I set the aperture ring to f16 the camera is reading it as f18. I need to ever so slightly move off f16 to make it pick up f16 again.
Looks like the aperture ring is a little off for some reason. but the odd thing is its only off at this particular setting. It fine at all other aperture settings

I didn't find this issue till yesterday since I almost never shoot past f11 otherwise would have sent it back.
Still under warranty with LCE.... I guess its worth giving them a shout.

Edit:
Tried it with clickless aperture, so it does hit f16 ever so slightly before the f16 marking and ever so slightly after f16 marking it moves very quickly to f18 (for other f-stop points you need to move the ring over half way between the two f-stop points before it pickup the next setting)
hmmm.... very odd that its like this only around f16

That’s annoying :(

My new A1 ....

Ok, so it would have been had I not bought this instead. Still, at least it made me take the camera out this morning for the first time in months

Crazy when you can buy a Ford Focus ST for the price of a camera

Very nice, enjoy (y)

Nice motor mate, the red looks well, mine is white.

Stage 1 remap makes a huge difference I have tried a few and the best for me was Dreamscience. Drives like a different car with the only downside being that I have to always use super unleaded. Enjoy all the pops and bangs! This forum is useful https://www.focusstoc.com/forums/

Welcome to the world of expensive fuel-ups from another super unleaded user!

I don't mind to be fair, its well worth the extra money so that the map runs as it should. The only downer is that I can't regularly get access to 99 ron so can't use the map I would prefer to use and have to use the 97 ron map.

The Escort is the same. I only run it on Tesco Momentum. Well, it can only run on premium fuel! I guess it'll run on the Shell V Power too.

Costco super or Sainsbury's super here as they're the only reasonable options close by that doesn't sit around for ages as they're the only ones who aren't crazily expensive.

I didn't realise Sainsbury did one. The local big store near to my work is always so busy! But it's on the way out of Bristol really towards the M5 at Avonmouth, Portishead, Weston too. The Tesco is closest to where I keep the Escort and the Costco is in Avonmouth so I'd do at least £10 getting there and back :ROFLMAO:

Costco (Gateshead) is normally if I'm passing or already in there, Sainsbury's is the closest two super markets with fuel (Washington or Durham) . The nearest Tesco with fuel is even further than Costco for me (Bishop Auckland or Newcastle). All the local shell garages are hideously expensive too. At 18mpg I go wherever is closer!

I ran a couple of files through denoise yesterday and noticed that although the jpeg's are slightly smaller the raws are double the size, maybe exactly double the size. I assume it's embedding something in the denoised raws?

All I can get in N.I is BP Ultimate or occasionally V Power. Unfortunately Tesco stopped doing Momentum a few years ago in N.I and the other supermarkets Sainsburys etc. have never offered it here.

Are the raws you're working with using any kind of compression?

I've never noticed before as I don't go back and check the raw/dng file but I just did and my NR files are about 1/3 larger than the original raw. As John says it could be something to do with compressed files as I shoot in lossless compressed, I'll have to try an uncompressed file and see if the NR file is still larger.

Just tried with uncompressed at 6400 ISO and 12800 ISO on the same scene, no settings on import

At 6400 ISO the raw is 107.3 mb, the NR file is 125.6mb
At 12800 ISO the raw is 107.7mb and the NR is 133mb

I don't know. These were Panasonic GX80 raws converted to DNG's and processed in PS2023 camera raw but checking some A7 raws one went from 23.2mb to 87mb and another 29.5 to 114mb, more than double, whilst the JPEG's for those two around doubled.

Interesting.

I have bit the bullet and updated the A1s to firmware 2.01. First camera went well and after a bit of testing now going through the process for the second camera. Already a few features I really like. Pressing a single button to protect and FTP an image would have been requested since A9 days so nice they have eventually got round to it. It not only allows a single press but but allows me to assign a rating button as I was all out of free buttons previously. Not tested but 10K images in a folder is welcome for me. The new layout in the menus is neither better or worse and when I am used to it I won't imagine I will see any difference. The other plus point which is also a pain is that I have reset the cameras. That is never a bad idea as it gives them a fresh start and allows me to put in place naming conventions and name the cameras which I should have done previously but was too lazy. It cost nothing so I'm happy that an excellent camera just got slightly better in terms of usability.

I'm still holding off on mine, I'm waiting to hear back from Sony on whether the new Firmware is bricking the Wifi and bluetooth on some cameras, or whether it's just highlighting those that are already faulty. My wifi works fine at the moment, but I've never managed to connect bluetooth. From what I can workout you can't connect via bluetooth in the normal fashion, i.e. put it in pairing mode then look for it in the bluetooth settings on my phone, apparently it needs specific apps and/or bluetooth remotes to connect via bluetooth. Is this the same for you?

With regards to protecting an image, is this write protecting so you don't accidentally delete it? I've never really understood (or looked in to) rating.

Having done a good test today I would say the transfer between camera and phone is now quicker for me. The biggest and most obvious difference is start up time. It is miles better and for those that switch cameras on and off often then that might be a decent plus point. One of my genuine batteries no longer works though. That may well be a coincidence as they have a pretty hard life and are used all the time from full to out of power in the grip. This is a 2020 battery so nowhere near the oldest and it will have been used lots of times previously. I did drop a battery the other day so I am putting it down to that and will have to make do with 14 now. It works fine in the A9 though.

Start up time sounds a plus, I know it only takes a couple of seconds or so to turn on but it can be a pain  :$

Many years ago I got a bollocking when I took my old megane rs250 in to be mapped, my wife had fuelled it with 95ron fuel I managed to get about 20 litres of v power in by the time I got to the tuners. He ended up putting in a couple of tins of octane booster before he’d map it, my wife’s never fuelled a car since after I passed on the bollocking. even the lawn mower gets v power these days it’s not happy on e10

My map is switchable so I can choose 95,97 or 99.

Can do the same if I go stage 2 as well.

Haven't decided if I want to go stage 2 or not yet. Have had the car about a year or so now and starting to get itchy feet looking at other cars.

Quite like the Hyundai Kona N spec would be a good sensible choice in terms of the size of the car, there is only for sale in N.I at the moment though and it's not the colour I want. Also considering a Mercedes CLA45 AMG which I passed on when I bought the ST, but that would be a less sensible choice. In an ideal world I would go for a Mercedes C63 but my budget won't stretch that far, well it would but the Missus would kill me. :ROFLMAO:
