Canon 5D or 7D?

.... Then realise how much more flexibility you had with a zoom.

Well if that's how you think why not go for a 18-270mm?

Seriously, these f4 zooms will not give you the aperture and creative flexibility or the quality of a high end fast prime and if looking at an APS-C body I personally think that the 17-40mm f4 makes no sense what so ever when you can get a 17-50mm f2.8 that'll offer a wider aperture, a sharper image and probably be more compact and lighter too. Take away the L logo and I don't see what the 17-40mm has to offer on APS-C.

You cant compare a superzoom to a decent F4 zoom. I could then say, get a 100mm prime on a APSC sensor and get a full body shot when the subject is in a smaller area.

The 17-40 suggestion was based on him going FF. I would highly recommend the 17-50 on APSC.

Would a combo of 17-40 and 24-105 be ok since there's only 7mm between the two at the wide end?

Remmeber though that each mm becomes more significant as you move towards the wide end. On pure numbers it looks like a 2/3rds crossover but really its more like 3/5ths in terms of angle of view.

Alot depends on how you intend to use the lenses aswell, I'v got a 10-22 and a 15-85 for example and I often just take one of them and like to limate changes between the two when I have both.

If your saying you want to do portraits etc then the 85mm 1.8 is more suitable than the 50mm 1.8 because it gives you a bit more space between you and your candid. On FF you would have to get up real close on the 50mm and puts people a bit on edge.

He also says he wants to do more holiday/friends stuff, so I think a wide angle faster than f4 will be useful- 28mm/24mm/20mm

Also remember candid is not the only way to shoot- if you look at the work of most portrait masters they get involved with their subject- they interact- they get in close and direct their subject- they make them express emotion.

Thanks coldrobba, I'm sure the 24-70 would be very nice but the price tag is too much.

For those interested, I have bought the following:

Canon 5D
Canon 7D
Canon 85mm 1.8
Canon 24-105mm

There may be one or two additions later. Currently I already own:

Canon 40D
Canon 50mm 1.8
Canon 17-55mm

I'll be keeping the kit for a couple of weeks before deciding what to keep. I'll post my thoughts here later. :)

awesome kit- you'll enjoy that i'm sure! Will be really interesting to hear your opinions on the 7d+ 17-55 vs 5d with 5d+ 24-105
and whether the 7d really does perform better than the 40d

The 7D does perform better than the 40D, hands down. I upgraded to the 7D from a 40D because of two main issues, high ISO performance and AF. The 7D knocks the 40D into a cocked hat for these and also allows for much greater cropping whilst keeping a decent image quality. It is a much, much better camera.
