I learned to drive in a Hillman Hunter..........but took my test in my dad's Morris 1100, a markedly shorter car compared to the Hunter
I took my test in a Triumph Toledo. Five lessons and the test, £25:00!I learned to drive in a Hillman Hunter..........but took my test in my dad's Morris 1100, a markedly shorter car compared to the Hunter
Has no one mentioned the Reliant Robin?Reliant Regal.
Me earlier.Has no one mentioned the Reliant Robin?
I can't recall how few lessons I had.....but not many as IIRC I took my test about 6 weeks after my 17th birthday.I took my test in a Triumph Toledo. Five lessons and the test, £25:00!
I passed my test in a Nissan Sunny. that was a little over 30 years ago and I was 29. It was actually my 4th test, but the first 3 were when I was late teens. Then I moved to Central London where the need and desire to be able to drive didn't exist.I can't recall how few lessons I had.....but not many as IIRC I took my test about 6 weeks after my 17th birthday.
As for the lesson costs, £1 per hour but I had 1.5 hour lessons @ 30bob a lesson. No idea of the cost of the test.....but I had two examiners in the car. The second one was the examiner's examiner!
PS I beat my older brother, I passed first time and he had a second test with total 30 lessons
Just to be anal - the 500 is a Cinquecento, so doesn't count. But Ford did a 500 in the 2000sStretching it a little - FIAT Five Hundred.
I learned to drive in my dads Morris Oxford,I can't recall how few lessons I had.....but not many as IIRC I took my test about 6 weeks after my 17th birthday.
Spooky. When I took my test the examiner asked if I minded his own examiner sitting in the back. You can't say no can you?I can't recall how few lessons I had.....but not many as IIRC I took my test about 6 weeks after my 17th birthday.

I learned to drive in my dads Morris Oxford,
took half a dozen lessons in the meantime, and passed first time. at 17. iirc 30 bob an hour.
He then gifted me an
Austin A35 van that was laid up after buying the Oxford.
I drove one of those once, not long after they came on the market.Bond bug , an orange plasticky thing
I don't ever recall hearing of anyone else have that extra one in the back, do yes spooky !Spooky. When I took my test the examiner asked if I minded his own examiner sitting in the back. You can't say no can you?
I distinctly remember him laying on the back seat when I reversed around the corner. After that he sat up again and got thrown on the floor when I did my emergency stop. It was a first time pass for me anyway, in a 1300 escort mk 1.
Likewise, I've never previously known anyone who had the testers testerI don't ever recall hearing of anyone else have that extra one in the back, do yes spooky !
In my case he sat in the back asking me to make sure he was out of my rear view mirror area.
I trained as a driving instructor years ago, ( I got bored very quickly driving the same routes day in day out)I don't ever recall hearing of anyone else have that extra one in the back, do yes spooky !
My test centre was either Wandsworth or Twickenham...... can't recall which was which because 2 years later I also took my Motorcycle test, both in the early 1970'sLikewise, I've never previously known anyone who had the testers tester
Mine was at the Hornsey test centre north London.
I surmise for instructors to get their qualifications there needs to be such oversight.I trained as a driving instructor years ago, ( I got bored very quickly driving the same routes day in day out)
and the second examiner was the last stage of a "provisional" instructors qualification.
Things may have changed of course.
Ah OK, Perhaps they have to go through the same thing to fully qualify as an examiner?Though in the case of what @Cockney and I are describing it was the test examiner being scrutinised.
None too sure but IIRC when I got back my instructor who had accompanied me to the test centre and had not notice the additional examiner get into my car, asked me about it!Ah OK, Perhaps they have to go through the same thing to fully qualify as an examiner?
