Car names

You forgot the wonderful
Austin Allegro.
Hillman hunter.
At the other end
Bristol Brigand.
Jowett Javelin.

Hilman Hunter! now that's some nostalgia right there for me, my Dad owned 2 of them. One navy, one gold. I still remember the licence plate number on the navy one [possibly the first car I was ever in] EIC 119

I learned to drive in a Hillman Hunter..........but took my test in my dad's Morris 1100, a markedly shorter car compared to the Hunter ;)

My Dad tried to teach my Mother how to drive in the Hunter, biggest mistake was having us in the back seat at the time [myself and my older bro and sis] - She had literally only got out the driveway and was heading for the first bend end of our street and we all started screaming "We're going to die!! Argh, don't let her drive!!!" :ROFLMAO:

She never got behind the wheel of a car again :/ we were such little sh*tbags [I was 5 or 6 at the time]

I took my test in a Triumph Toledo. Five lessons and the test, £25:00!

I can't recall how few lessons I had.....but not many as IIRC I took my test about 6 weeks after my 17th birthday.

As for the lesson costs, £1 per hour but I had 1.5 hour lessons @ 30bob a lesson. No idea of the cost of the test.....but I had two examiners in the car. The second one was the examiner's examiner!

PS I beat my older brother, I passed first time and he had a second test with total 30 lessons :D

I passed my test in a Nissan Sunny. that was a little over 30 years ago and I was 29. It was actually my 4th test, but the first 3 were when I was late teens. Then I moved to Central London where the need and desire to be able to drive didn't exist.

Can't remember how much lessons were for the first 3 tests, but the lessons for the 4th were £14 iirc.

Saab Sonnet - I would be disappointed if I didn;t come up with that one, being a Saab fanboy.

I can think of more;

Nissan Note
Austin Atlantic
Marcos Mantis
Bentley Bentayga
Humber Hawk
Jowett Javelin
Maserati Merak
Toyota Tercal
Cadillac Cimmaron/Chevrolet Cavalier (same car as Mk2 VX Cavalier)
Vauxhall Victor/Ventora/Velox
Vauxhall Viva
Dodge Dart
Ford Festiva (ford badged Kia Pride/Mazda 121
Ford Figo (Indian Fiesta variant)

I learned to drive in my dads Morris Oxford,
took half a dozen lessons in the meantime, and passed first time. at 17. iirc 30 bob an hour.
He then gifted me an
Austin A35 van that was laid up after buying the Oxford.

Spooky. When I took my test the examiner asked if I minded his own examiner sitting in the back. You can't say no can you?
I distinctly remember him laying on the back seat when I reversed around the corner. After that he sat up again and got thrown on the floor when I did my emergency stop. It was a first time pass for me anyway, in a 1300 escort mk 1. :D

James Hunt drove an A35 van as his road vehicle. He reckoned that he could hoon around in it and not get in to too much trouble!

Bond bug , an orange plasticky thing
I drove one of those once, not long after they came on the market.

Once was rather more than enough... :(

I don't ever recall hearing of anyone else have that extra one in the back, do yes spooky !

In my case he sat in the back asking me to make sure he was out of my rear view mirror area.

Likewise, I've never previously known anyone who had the testers tester
Mine was at the Hornsey test centre north London.

I trained as a driving instructor years ago, ( I got bored very quickly driving the same routes day in day out)
and the second examiner was the last stage of a "provisional" instructors qualification.
Things may have changed of course.

My test centre was either Wandsworth or Twickenham...... can't recall which was which because 2 years later I also took my Motorcycle test, both in the early 1970's

I surmise for instructors to get their qualifications there needs to be such oversight.

Though in the case of what @Cockney and I are describing it was the test examiner being scrutinised.

I felt quite reassured and pleased that I had passed first time under such circumstances:)

Ah OK, Perhaps they have to go through the same thing to fully qualify as an examiner?

None too sure but IIRC when I got back my instructor who had accompanied me to the test centre and had not notice the additional examiner get into my car, asked me about it!

So perhaps not a common occurrence (back then) but yes it could be anything from 'qualification' to monitoring & oversight???
