A face or mask, probably dating from the 12thC, sculpted into the chancel arch of Coombes Church in East Sussex by a group of artists from Lewes Priory.
Taken some years ago with a D7000 and 24-85 kit lens.

"This is a church made memorable by its ghastliness, the result of its reconstruction in 1871 in a highly exaggerated neo-Norman style. According to Pevsner, who described the arcade as "uncommonly ugly"

The stone decoration is more anachronistic than ugly. For a small church it works well enough.
Side isles and their associated arcade of pillars are always a problem. They need to be as slender as possible to better the line of sight to the altar and pulpit but still have arches strong enough to support the Roof. It is only the decoration that is over the top. However the roof is too low to contain later pointed arches and longer columns. so they have done the best they could , and I am sure the Victorians loved the makeover. I suspect the Architect gave the parish a few options and this is what the Diocese approved for them when they applied for a faculty.

A couple from Salisbury Cathedral. Amazing architecture, these vaulted ceilings are fantastic.

These grand church interiors are all very well and good but I always thought that if Christianity had a redeeming feature it was summed up by: "Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms." (1 Peter 4:10 )

This is Sid's Cafe, part of St Sidwell's Church in Exeter, where people who need a cheap meal can find it and where people who need a helping hand can receive it...
