Hartford, Cheshire

Hartford has two railway stations, one on the main Liverpool-London Line and the other on route from Manchester via Northwich to Chester. This latter station was originally called Hartford & Greenbank, but was renamed Greenbank to avoid confusion. The Hartford station was reworked in the 60's with mainline electrification and included a concrete sign (sadly now obscured by Openreach Comms Boxes!) - and the covered walkway up from the platforms was removed.

Really liking the wet station. Appeals to my sense of symmetry

Two posts in one day - what has come over me!! I've been in contact with Alex Birtwisle, his family have been in Hartford for many many years, his great great grandfather (born 1837) owned the Blacksmiths which was opposite the current shops, but was demolished after WW1 when the road was widened. He then bought some land opposite Mid-Cheshire College and opened a garage. This garage was re-located in the 1970's to a site in 'Old Harford' and the site opposite Mid-Cheshire College became a petrol station, and in the late 2000's became a Sainsbury's Local.

My interest in contacting Alex Birtwisle is that my house is built on land that was the site of the 'Old Hartford' garage, and now through him and another party I have a collection of images of that site during operation and demolition!

Anyway back to the site opposite Mid-Cheshire College
