I think that you made the right choice Tim but that first shot really adds some "depth" to the story behind that chosen one...

That shot of the layers and layers of paint is great - interesting and I love the colours from it.

As per Allan's comment though. It would have been better with more DoF, but I was shooting wide open due to the light and not having a tripod with me.
I would have upped the ISO and gone for a smaller aperture if I'd realised the DoF was as small as it was - but it looked better on the back of the camera.

I actually came here to comment on how much I liked your chosen shot. I think I still prefer it as a shot - the close up makes it stand out from some of the other topics I've seen so far.

But I love the idea behind the layers of paint. Brilliant little detail.
