Week 10 - Free.

At the risk of being repetitive, some more water related fun. As I was looking at the screen on the back of my camera when taking water drop shots yesterday I started to see things in the patterns. Almost like galaxies or nebulae and such like. My thoughts then turned to a sequence of water drop shots of a space like or other worldly (is that a word?) theme. In the end, as I was editing the images, I thought it looked more like beer so I changed my mind and called it 'Amber Nectar'. Funny how things kinda evolve like that!

Still early days with this but it is sooooo addictive. My next hurdle to stumble over is getting it all in focus. The drop collisions are quite small and it's a balancing act between getting the image DoF great enough but not having the camera so far away that I have to over crop and lose detail... Answers on a post card please

As you know Lee, like you I'm still a novice, but I don't think there's any way to get all the collision event in focus, other than backing the camera up, or stopping down to minimum aperture.
I've stopped down as far as I dare (no further than f16 to avoid defraction effects) and when I'm close to the collision, I'm still getting OOF areas.
It's so tempting to fill the frame with the collision, but there's always going to be a push-pull with focus and size.
If you back up the camera a little, and are using a large-ish drop tray, you could get some nice surface ripples in the shot, and furthermore, if you use a thickening agent (eg. xantham gum) then the ripples will be neater....I'm still experimenting with mixes, so I've got a lot to learn!
You might have to crop a tiny bit, but it might be a worthwhile sacrifice to achieve front to back sharpness.

Nevertheless, this image is amazing....I love it!
And I agree, it is incredibly addictive....my setup has sprung a serious leak, so I haven't been able to use it for a while....I must fix it soon....starting to get withdrawal symptoms!!

That IS a good start for Wet, Lee, with the great colours and shapes formed by the water. It's something I want to try too, so I'm always fascinated by images like this. And then you topped it with your image for the open theme, with that elegant 'stem' capped by all the little drops around the edge of the main ring

Thanks Bob. Some more experimentation required. I am determined to get it all in focus. Sadly, it's not something that can be fixed by focus stacking!

Thank you so much Gareth. I used a small amount of Guar Gum for that shot. It makes things a lot easier (apart from the repetitive straining of the liquid) but I had to start again with the drop controller settings as everything needs more time. That is one benefit of triggering the flash - I can see the drops mid fall if the flash is firing too early. Thanks for the tips on focussing. There is more experimentation to be done

Thank you for your comments Stan. The box of tricks sorts out the timing but the water drops do their own thing every time. Every photo looks different. I will be backing the camera off to allow more room around it though. It's all part of the learning curve!

Wet - Great colour and excellent 3D effect. It takes on the appearance of some extruded coloured glass.

Free - Well worth the time and effort you've put into making the controller and learning this technique. I've got to admit I prefer the second shot you used for this theme, I think because I feel blue suits water shots better, and the shappe of the splash reminds me of a mushroom.

It's a very busy week and the poor camera hasn't seen the light of day for quite while now. Another rummage through the archive has resulted in the following outrageous shoe horn. I'm not really happy about using another archive shot so soon but needs must as I really don't want to get into the habit of missing a week and having to catch up.

It's been locked with a sturdy chain and part of a tree trunk has been left behind it just in case someone breaks the padlock. Is it blocked? Answers on a postcard to the usual address....
