New Old Film Challenge discussion thread

I've only recently started shooting film again (2019) so I don't have loads scanned but I like to take part and managed to find a shoehorn for this one.
Bikers would see that Sakakaki as a classic, so no shoe horning involved (y)

With reference to the first post in the new thread, my dad had a Ford Classic, it was the first car I drove after passing my test.
Well I picked up a 1500cc engine from the breakers to replace the 1350cc but found the lug on the engine to hold alternator was broken :( and attached/bolted to the alternator bracket, so bought the engine indoors and araldited the lug back on with heat from a parafin heater...it worked and didn't have any problems.

Any stragglers for the challenge "Classic" as it would be ending by the 4th with a poll going up on that day.

Poll open for challenge "Classic" (y)...get voting for your favourite three.

Interesting... I've gone for a shoehorn here. I'm wondering if we'll get a Pentax 17 diptych, the idea seemed to be fairly heavily promoted when it came out. Could be any half frame camera I guess. Also a portrait format 645 like my Fuji GS646S. Hmm, maybe I should take that out again... leaving the lens cap at home this time!

Here we are looking for a juxtaposition of two or more related images presented as one. The first time that the challenge has allowed more than one image I believe. Conceptual image combinations should be accompanied by a verbose, Marxist, intellectual explanation, in the style of John Berger.
This really made me smile and took me back to my university days when no essay or critique was complete with referencing John Berger's "Ways of Seeing" or Susan Sontag's "On Photography"

With only a day or so left I'd like to add a word or two about presentation. I realise that arranging pictures side by side can be time consuming. So, looking at the definition of diptych, for example, as an art term a diptych is an artwork consisting of two pieces or panels that together create a single art piece, there is no reason why the elements necessarily have to be side by side for this challenge.

Just thought this might open things up a bit.

Should this be closing?

Hi @Kell , Looks like you've set up the new challenge OK. However, traditionally the new old film challenge is shorter than most, as we only have to search our back catalogues; usually it's open for about a week, then the poll for 3 days or so.

Ah ok. So entries until next Monday?

So New Old Film Challenge #250 is Fungi. Something autumnal that's not just leaves and colours.

As a reminder, the idea of this series is to dig into your back catalogue and find something already taken, developed and scanned prior to the start moment. So it doesn't have to be very old! But definitely not something taken after this announcement. The timescale is usually short (in this case to near midnight 7 December... December already, eeks!) and the voting period even shorter.

Just a reminder, this challenge for film photos of fungi, mushrooms, toadstools, any other kinds of fungi, and apparently over-stuffed shelf units with accompanying bad puns (but, crowbars and shoehorns welcome!) will end Saturday midnight. Surely more than 4 of us have something suitable?

I've had a good look and was surprised that I don't even have a shoehorn entry!

Same here in umpteen years have never taken a shot of mushrooms/fungi/black mold in bathroom seal/fungi on lens etc etc, but had a toe nail once that had to treated o_O:(

Me too, I've only recently (last 5 or so yrs) got back into film prior to that I haven't got any scanned. As many will know I mainly focus on landscape and these days Dartmoor so many of the themes that come up and in FPOTY I won't have stuff for. That said when I do I run them even though my entries may be a bit samey-samey.

I've got a couple of lenses with fungus in them, but hadn't thought to photograph it

Poll added for NOFC #250...

Well for me I thought the new challenge "childhood memories" would be easy, but what I remember has gone and haven't taken now and then shots (as I didn't use a camera as a child until about 13), anyway it would be a boring if I had a today shot of a street jammed with parked cars, which was empty in the past, playing ball games and marbles along the kerb.
H'mm thinking cap on what to post.

Surely folks, there are more than 2 of us whose back catalogue contains something applicable to childhood memories? Including, um, [checks notes] @Clive K ? ;)

Given how busy folks are at this time of year, maybe it's worth extending it until the new year as a one-off?

I thought that this challenge would have resulted in more entries than the previous fungi challenge. I won't be adding to the numbers though. I don't think it is fair to pick a subject and enter a photograph as it might be seen to favour the previous month's winner. That is how we used to operate in the camera club that I used to be a member of. The previous winner picked a theme and sat that round out.

I've nothing that has been scanned............... again. :(

That is applies to me too. I have many photos on slides that I don't have the means to make a decent scan of.

This might be a good idea, Clive?

I'm happy with that idea. I'll leave it open for comments for 24 hours and act according to the majority.

I'm sure I've got something, I just dont have the time to trawl through the shoeboxes at the moment.

With Clive's mention of scanner:-
There is no need to spend a lot of money on a scanner for occassional scanning e.g. my Epson perfection 4180 is good enough for 35mm print A4 for joe public and much better for MF, check Xmas markets or booty for one ( I bought mine years ago for about £3-£5) and works in win 11, you will have to decide if ebay prices are worth it for an old scanner£30-£50...e.g. Epson 3200 was a good one for £30 collection in Chester but have no idea if it works in win 11. But it is essential if you choose a scanner to make sure it has neg holders and power supply.
Scanned 6X4 print with 4180 h'mm a bit over sharpened in PS:-

Hey folks, discussions should be on here, not on the entries thread!

Merry Christmas and my thoughts ATM:- getting a new motorcycle and travelling around (as I've I've run out of new shots 6 mile rad from my home).... I still can't use up the film as I'm too fussy e.g. landscape ruined as it's not a clear day etc....36 exp has take a year + and 24 exp up to 9 months, grand children are not interested as they can't see the shots straight away or soon.
So thinking I would be better off using a 645 or 6X7 camera. h'mm wierd thinking I know i.e. using a MF camera for the only reason to use up film more quickly. o_O

So @Sangoma was the winner of the Childhood Memories challenge, I think. Time for a new challenge, Steve?
