Nifty Fifty Week Challenge Discussion Thread.

Topsy's 50 shot with a 50 #1.
That is a lovely shot of a lovely camera, just got my first film camera in many years and hoping to post some shots from it later in the week
A bit naff, but............... The weather's not good here.
Well I like the image a bit of fun which is what this is all about.

I think all three of us will be looking for a bit better weather so we can get up on Dartmoor and get some Nifty Fifty shots, so if either of you see a big biker with bright orange combat trousers lugging camera gear around please feel free to say hello :)

I’ve not taken a pic for 2 years, as lockdown #1 killed my mojo! So this thread has given me a push.I slapped on my old plastic 50mm this morning with intentions of going for a walk. Spotted a little mouse on the bird feeder, so nipped out for my first pic, had to get really really close :D
Glad this thread has given you a push, and the mouse shot is great.

That is a cracking photo, made me want a fry-up :)
Thank you Chris, if you ever get to Newquay I will buy you one, at £5.40 inc tea I can afford to be generous! Be warned though, that's the "small " breakfast and I have never managed to eat all that.

Check out my Blog from this week (https://www.ephotozine.com/user/topsyrm-149719/blog/) we managed to avoid rain on Thursday on Hound Tor and Greator Rocks. I have to say @Baloo I rarely go up to Dartmoor on my bikes for photography I just wouldn't be able to settle leaving them parked beside the road for any length of time.

I have bookmarked you blog so will be visiting regularly, enjoyed looking at your 52. Unfortunately I struggle to walk very far so I never go too far from the bike, would love to roam across the moors as you do, but at least I always find a friendly sheep to look after the bike!

Weather was shocking here today's made do with an indoors shot (y)
I think the weather was shocking all over the country, I really like the glow you have got on the OM 10, I wonder how many OM10s were the first camera for people, it really is a classic.

That looks like the road up between Rowtor and West Mill Tor on the way to the track to Yes Tor. Your bike would be pretty safe there I think. (y)

here's 2 from a wet and windy Lancashire
Lets hope we get some better weather this week, your brush shot is my favourite, like the mono conversion.
They are more than ok, Roxi looks a little character, number two is my favourite, the eyes are brighter. Not even the dog listens to me at my place!

The weather here is "dreich" ... still, wet & a heavy mist. Tomorrows a better day though, so I'll get out and see what happens.

Thanks! Just making some use of an RGB light panel. Took a few attempts to get a colour I was happy with.

Great idea for a thread and some lovely images in here already. We got a bit of sun this morning so I took advantage and went for a walk around Hatfield Moors. Image posted in other thread.

I realised I don't have a 50mm (or equivalent) prime for my D500 nor Olly outfits. I managed, though, to get out for a walk today with my Pentax LX + 50mm lens, so film entries are being worked on. I don't fancy faffing about with setting a zoom lens to 50mm equivalent, but had a brainwave to fit my 28mm Pentax-A manual lens via PK-M43 adapter to one of the Olympus bodies, so will give that ago this week (56mm equiv.)

I was hoping to get there this week but not now. I'm too far away to go if I'm not going to get the weather I want. I'm not hard to spot if I've just jumped (or falllen.... ;)) out of an old and rather battered looking red lwb Defender. Further afield I'm the shortarse with the big grey rucksack and any 'designer walkers' will be avoiding me like I have the plague (I don't know why but they really do........)

I'm easy to recognise on the Moor and am normally about on Tuesday's (unless a storm (Barra) decides to do Tuesday), big bag and tripod with X-T2 in "quick-draw pouch" :ROFLMAO:

Now I'll probably get told off for posting a picture in this thread.

Hey Roger, have you caught Mike Browne's latest Youtube videos where he rides out to photo locations (on his Triumph) it's a good watch if you haven't combines both my passions. (y)

Quick question if I may. Do you folks always shoot in M mode for everything, all the time? I appreciate you'll be more advanced than I am, but how do you shoot in M mode for the quick pictures? I have to take multiple shots before I get settings right, by then I've missed most snaps.

I.must admit I usually take a couple in P 'just in case' Then on to manual for fine tuning

The only time I use manual mode is if I'm using flash. Nearly all other times I use aperture priority and sometimes I'll use shutter priority.

A mode 90% of the time, S or Tv mode 5% of the time.

but how do you shoot in M mode for the quick pictures?
There are occasions where you can pre-set your camera for quick pictures, like Street with moving subject where you might choose 1/500 sec to freeze motion. Manual Focus, f/.8 guesswork because you don't actually pinpoint the subject, just estimate it will appear in your broad DoF, and therefore up the ISO. The semi auto modes fight to bring ISO down whereas 3K or 6K may be fine.

Super, that makes me feel less useless lol as I use aperture mode mostly
Another one here who tends to shoot in AP most of the time, I use the auto ISO function and set it to a limit depending on the camera ISO 1600 is about the limit I ever go to.

If I am shooting fast moving objects I tend to use SP and set it to the shutter speed I think I am going to need.

I have three custom/programable settings which I have set for the long telephoto, one for birds, one for motorbikes and one for model gliders.

In really difficult lighting conditions I will bracket the exposure in drive menu and merge in LR.

So if I am out just walking with the camera I will be in AP with auto ISO and the metering set to center weighting.

I need to read a bit more about my S5 as it looks like it has some programmable modes also.

Programme it at the time, on the day. Re-programme it as light conditions change.

M mode will tell you if you're over or under exposed.

I mention Street because lots of togs like to be deliberately underexposed to play with shadows.

Anyway, M mode is rarely needed. I find it useful when needing both lots of DoF at a high speed.

I don't know much about flash but @Nostromo knows his stuff.

Mainly A for me too unless there is a reason not too e.g, moving things that need S priority. It also depends on the camera for me, I often use P and sometimes Auto on my EM5, I think it's as much to do with the convenience of the available controls, I want the easiest to use dial to be the one controlling the main thing over which I want creative control for the circumstances.

Always shoot in M but that's probably because I grew up with fully manual 35mm cameras. With wildlife I want the aperture and ss fixed so I use auto iso which takes care of the majority of situations. That's something you can't do with film! Landscape I will use A mode with the aperture and iso I want just to get an idea of ss. The equivalent of using the exposure meter in the 35mm camera. Exerience tells me to use that ss or a different one. I don't always get it right first time, especially as I'm often dealing with tricky lighting and my cameras are hardly top end, so struggle with dynamic range. Dartmoor tors don't usually run away while I'm taking a few shots....... In the end it really doesn't matter how you achieve the image you want, but whichever mode you use your camera will not get it right all the time. If it did I wouldn't have had to take the lens shot 4 or 5 times and the 'toad' twice

Kell's Bowl of Apples:
That is three nice photos you done there Kell but I particularly like the humour and creativeness of this.

I have to say, I most often shoot in Aperture Priority.

I do tend to to preset the ISO to keep it low-ish. And then let the shutter speed take care of itself

if I’m setting up a tripod shot, I might move to fully manual if I want to try something the camera wouldn’t normally let you do in auto.

Like deliberately under expose something or use a longer shutter speed. But even then sometimes just shutter priority.

I rarely shoot in full auto mode - except when the settings I’ve chosen clearly aren’t working. ;)

Thanks Paul I watched one last night, there are times when I think of getting an Adventure Bike to get me to places where I cannot walk but most appear to be no good for off road. I had a BMW R80 GS many years ago which really was a proper go anywhere bike. :)
