In 2018 I went to take some pictures for a friend in Italy. Their house is in the Marche, an area prone to earthquakes, and they'd had a major quake in 2016 that caused destruction in many towns and villages. Everywhere we drove there were houses partially fallen, holes in roofs, walls missing. In many towns the less badly damaged buildings were held together with steel wires running around the outside. Lots of villages were simply fenced off, too dangerous to allow the public to enter.

We drove over to Casteluccio del Norcia in Umbria - famous for its flower fields, and found the same thing.
