weekly SimonB 52 for 2022 - Week 52 - Showcase

I managed to be a bit more proactive this week and got this picture while I was out for a walk. The tree stump represents the destruction of habitat (although I think the tree was overhanging a railway line).

I have no idea what the blue wall plugs are for unless someone does.

Stumped
by Simon Brown

I think they’re tree stump killers, a way of preventing the tree regrowing. Made a good focal point for the picture as well!

I'm with Alan, I think they're probably the same as THESE but a different brand.

Nice idea, and the low angle works well. The blue plugs create a question, making it more involving.

Nice warming shot Simon, nice to see you light the wood from the top, it seems unnatural, but works.

Perfect for the theme and nicely composed. The blue things do add interest too.

Edit: Love your snapper's choice shot. Perfectly exposed. It looks like someone has set fire to that building blocks game, Jenga :)

Ahh, now that would make sense! Thanks.

Cheers, not the ones you would use in the house for DIY!

Thanks!

Fits the theme well, focus works well to highlight the theme.

Pete

Thank you!

A bit of tinkering with the camera and lightroom as the light was fading fast when I took the picture. We have not long had the fire and the guidance suggests that lighting a fire this way was better, less smoke etc it works very well.

Thank you very much, my Jenga skills are coming into play here HA!

Works well Alan, I like the low perspective with the leading line of the path in the background.

Well spotted and fits the theme nicely. If the blue plugs are connected with ensuring it is dead then even more "destructive" :D

Interesting shot with the blue wall plugs. Nicely captured.

Good shot and the blue plugs enhance the story.

Thanks everyone, I'm glad that I got an answer for the blue plugs of death!

This is the time of year that people start thinking about Christmas (I know it's still November!)

So guess what? Our tree was put up and decorated today with plenty of ornaments added. Here is an attempt at being creative and possibly including leading lines?

Hope you all like it.

Bauble Time

Love it! Although I deduct one point for being too early putting your Christmas tree up

Seriously, it's fab. Love the idea and the colours. How did you do it?

Point deducted :(:ROFLMAO:

Thanks very much, I set the camera up on a tripod and set the exposure time for a second and a half and when the camera was taking the picture I carefully zoomed in on the bauble to create the streaks of light!

Very good, reminds me of Doctor Who.

Ah yes very good!

Lovely shot Simon. I do like a Christmas ornament close up

Thanks Simon it was fun to mess about with this one.

Excellent idea Simon. I think this qualifies for leading lines too.

Thanks, leading lines it is!

Thank you! I did wonder but I thought maybe other bits would blur too if you did that. I guess it depends how long you leave it stationary for - you've timed it perfectly. Well done

That works really well. Loads going on and really punchy. If you squint, it's almost an astro shot.

Definitely fulfills the tech portion Simon, love the colours. A very creative way to capture the season.

I thought of a few NSFW examples for this theme but I'm sure people would prefer not to see a picture of my bottom! I quite enjoy driving and there is nothing better than a curvy road to drive down, it certainly beats the motorway. Here is a curvy road from a different perspective as the sun was setting.

I had to be quite mindful of flying the drone around here as there is a small airport a few miles away along with a microlight field too. Thankfully this drone has geofencing built in and I can limit the maximum height to keep myself out of the way!

The road is long

Super shot Simon! Ideal for the theme and the use of the drone enables such unusual perspectives for the photographer.

Nice idea for the theme, great PoV and the light has worked in your favour to produce some lovely long shadows

When is a bend a curve? And vice-versa. A debate I had with myself when trying to shoehorn bent pipes into the topic that led me to think about roads. The lighting is great in this shot, by the way.

Ornament: Would like to say I like it - apart from the tree being up FAR too early :D
Curves: Nice soft lighting on the fields... I'm not sure if it needs a bit of straightening?

Very interesting curvy photo with loads of detail.

Pete

Thanks, a little tweak with lightroom helped to pull out some detail.

Great idea Simon. Well done.

Thanks!

Never thought of it that way! I'm going to say it's a bendy curve of a road ;)

I do like the Ornament shot, and guessed it was done using zoom and long exposure :)

Thanks, yep you're right around 1.5 seconds, steadily zooming out and trying to minimise any wobble.

I would agree the tree was a good week up too early!

It's funny that you mention straightening the picture, as I had the same feeling but I couldn't adjust it in a way that I was happy with so I left it as it was.

Nicely captured curvy road. Lovely light.

Thanks very much!

Another week has flown by again!

I've had this idea for the theme in my head since the weekend and kept telling myself I'll do it tomorrow night I have plenty of time...not!

I thought using a soldering iron would be unlikely to feature in the posted pictures and it's a little different. I spent a bit of time playing around with the lighting as I wanted the focus to be on the wires as though I was using a work light. Some fiddling in lightroom got the effect that I was after so I'm happy enough with it.

I was glad that the plume of smoke was caught too.

Soldering

That’s a superb shot Simon!

I'm impressed that you actually plugged it in. The smoke really does add to it.

It must have taken such a lot of jiggery pokery to get everything in the right place and not burn anything and the lighting works really well. Presumably you used a self timer? Very well done.

Thanks, it was a tricky getting everything together. However I must confess that my wife actually pushed the shutter button! Although I did guide her in right direction.
