weekly TomD13’s 52 challenge (2020) - Week 25: Snappers Choice

Interesting subject and lovely set of tools - agree that the coloured versions are better than the silhouette.

Yep it’s me, and I joined this year too.
Yeah I’ve come to realise there is a few of us, I go out with Nicola B once a month shooting. Whenever I work with Will D we end up screenshotting the MDT on the map screen when we see a stunning location to re visit on rest days.
Guess where I’m off to next week ;-)

A good set of images, I actually think the silhouette is the best image.
 
What fabulous sculptures - brought a smile to my face. I definitely think you chose the right one from a good set of images.
 
Great sculptures, I think the one you posted on the main thread works the best!

I'm with Dominic @Nostromo however, in that I really think your silhouette is a beauty!
It's simple and has a strong composition...and that sky?! Marvellous!

That's a great selection for Tools, Tom, and what a fascinating set of structures! You've done them justice with your different angles and the silhouette is a really striking image, but I think the one you picked for the main image thread just pips it as the right choice with the great light and textures of rust. Well done on an excellent set.

Well; this year hasn't gone well with my 52 project for a variety of reasons including some health issues and lately my career involves me being on the frontline with the current pandemic (I have taken some of the photos, but just never got time to upload them to my computer, let alone on here!).

Does anyone object to me trying to play catchup over the next few days?? I need something to take my mind off everything so I don't burn out at work!!

Hi all!

I have returned, and I must apologise for the time it has taken for me to photograph/post these photos. As I have described, both health/family and the current COVID-19 situation has taken it's toll and I have fallen far behind. Alas, here are my photos for weeks 4-15...



Week4: Discarded Boatyard
For week 4, I spent ages for a car which has been left in the undergrowth from a crash many years ago, but I could not find it for the life of me despite driving the same route multiple times (I have since found it!!!). I did however go for a walk around Bosham near Chichester and found the abandoned Burnes Shipyard which has been derelict for the best part of 25 years. It is clear that the site has changed a lot over the years, it suffered an arson attack in 2015 and is since boarded up. There used to be an old car inside along with various remains, however it is both difficult and unsafe to see inside!

Week 5: Snappers Choice (Silhouette technique)
I panicked here and didn't know what to do. I have used a carving that was given as a wedding present to try a silhouette. Not sure about the outcome, but finally happy with the content.

Week 6: Wild
Due to me being late to the party, I struggled with wild. I was going to give you a photo of the lawn before I cut it but decided to go back through some photos from my trip to Costa Rica. I went in 2018 with my wife and fell in love with the country. Costa Rica really has taken a piece of my heart!! My biggest regret was not taking my camera/kit, but rather using my wife's bridge camera which struggled to focus in the heat (looked fine of the small screen!!). This Caiman was particularly interested in our boat, getting a little closer than I would have like...especially being about 7.5ft long! Costa Rica is amazing for wildlife being home to a huge 5% of the world's species and biodiversity...oh, and Sloths! #PuraVida

Week 7: Broken on the frontline
This photo, perhaps a little controversial, reflects how I am feeling following clinical shifts recently. I have had to make hard decisions that affect peoples lives whilst working in difficulty and unprecedented circumstances. And yet I am still seeing people out, socialising in parks/beaches whilst I risk my life to protect those at risk. I have seen colleagues lives lost not knowing if/when I will be hit and how it affects me. Remember this virus is non-discriminatory, please stay at home and keep your loved ones safe!

I decided to give the low-key affect a go whilst attempting high key for week 15, I've never tried it before so welcome any comments. I literally had my phone providing side light, so appreciate I could have used something brighter/softer!

Week 8: Ability
I have spent ages chasing the cat round the garden in the lockdown period, waiting for her to jump the fence so I can catch her Agility....then I realised the theme was ability. In desperation, I have gone simple. As my son gets older, he is developing every day and his ability is increasing. So the perfect choice was one of his toys!

Week 9: Winter has ended
This gorgeous blossom tree (note the technical term there!) always depicts the end of winter and that spring has sprung. It always has a dark pink, almost magenta appearance for the first few days before fading to a pale pink.

Week 14: Passing Time in Lockdown
Apparently this is called Clock Patience...and it's passing the time for my wife in lockdown!

Week 15: Snappers Choice (High Key technique)
I have never tried high-key before, so thought I would try and get it done on my snappers choice. This is an Orchid that I've tried to get a macro shot on. I've only ever really dabbled in Macro therefore don't own any macro lenses, so I tried with an 18-55mm kit lens.

The dripping / bleeding hearts are absolutely beautiful - lovely composition. And I love your Peter Rabbit! I don't envy your line of work at the moment - my sister is a GP and her other half is an anaesthesiologist - I am frequently failing at expressing my feelings towards the people near me (US based - but that's not the point) who just don't seem to get the concept that this virus is A Big Thing. Your self portrait is extremely expressive, and I would be disappointed at anyone who finds it controversial.

I love the self-portrait, it's quite a powerful image. I really like the pics of the Dicentra and of the blossom. Your Snapper's Choice works well for high key. You've held the detail nicely in the white petals.

Great catch-up! Loving the high key snapper's choice, very delicate detail in the white petals works nicely. And of course the low key self portrait!

There are some nice images there, snappers choice is my pick of the bunch.
Having said that, week 7 selfie is very poignant, stay safe (y)

Nice set of catchup shots the two that stand out for me is #1 Broken; your expression just reflects the feeling about the current situation. #2 Fence; the colourful sock makes a boring barbed-wired fence looks interesting.

Thank you for your comments, the Peter Rabbit one was a difficult one to catch as my son wanted to reclaim his toy (despite not using it until I picked it up!!). Really kind, thank you for your support with my role and as you say, many don't seem to understand the impact. At least I am back on board to keep my mind on something else :)

Thank you Pete, I particularly like the Dicentra. I look at it everytime, but never photographed it. Bit difficult with a non-macro lens as the hearts are so close together and kept getting in the way. I really enjoyed the high-key one...again, never done anything like this so a little out of my comfort zone but I'm pleased with how it turned out :)

Thank you Cobra, doing my best to stay safe and I am going to try harder on here to keep my wellbeing (especially after a long 15+ hour shift yesterday!)

That's some catch up!
  • Discarded - Whilst I really like the colourful images, I think this is my favourite. I like the gritty feel to it.
  • Free Week 1 - Bang on for the technique, and nicely framed in the image.
  • Wild - Rather you than me, close to that beastie... Looks fine on here, not seeing any focus issues.
  • Broken - I think you probably had just the right amount of light, the shot is moody, and brighter and I think you'd have had unwanted highlights (or the light would have or have been further away, which means it could have spread).
    I understand your frustration at those breaking the lockdown - my brother is an ambulance driver so like you, at risk helping others.
  • Ability - Works for the theme and it's nice and colourful :)
  • Winter - This is my 2nd fav of your catchup, it's the riot of colour that draws me in (so completely different to discarded).
  • Book - Peter Rabbit ? (Unless it's watership down).
  • Transport - Needs no explanation and a good use of the littlelun's toys :)
  • Fence - Good use of shallow DoF. I do find the twig that is directly behind the fence (but very oof) a bit distracting though.
    Probably not something that would have been apparent on the small screen on the camera.
  • Flora - Pink works well against the green and nice use of diagonals. It may have been worth getting rid of the intrusion above the main subject (on the right).
  • Time - 2 in one there :) I haven't played clock patience for years...
  • Free week 2 - Works well for the technique. (Good call going for the tech on both free weeks ;) ). A nice shot and I love the detail in the centre of the flowers.

I quite like the roughness of the Discarded as well, and yes - definitely Peter Rabbit!! I hadn't noticed the twig being the fence (not sure how considering it is so big!!) :LOL:
 
Week 16: My Initial (the letter T!)
This is the Slipper Millpond in Emsworth (although I was stood in Hermatige!) which is a 7 acre pond built in the 1700's to power the old mill which provided meal for the Royal Navy in Portsmouth. I took this whilst on a walk with the little'n on Monday, although I'm not overly happy with this one. I wanted to got for Tranquility, but struggled to get a decent long exposure to flatten the water as I didn't have my tripod on me. It was however very peaceful and a good time to reflect.

I think I'm glad you didn't go for a long exposure, I don't think a milky surface would work with the scene, the detail of the waves looks right for this kind of shot.
The dry grass in the foreground looks like it's blowing in the wind, a long exposure would kill it.
I don think the composition works (you could have lost some of the sky (as it's flat) - but not really needed - it does work with it).
 
Agree - I think a long exposure wouldn't necessarily have worked for this, but the shot as it is, is lovely.
 
nice take on the them tom agin I tdon't think a long exposure would have worked with this one.

Good use of the reeds in the foreground, it helps break the photo into ⅓s.
