I'm having similar issues shooting black squirrels against bright grass so pinging this thread for hints from you experts. Thanks. I've been finding that using the tone curve sliders in LR3 gives better range of blacks than hitting the fill light (makes the blacks look washed out some). Gives a better balanced image as a whole than painting in dark areas with higher brightness / exposure.
Try over exposing the shot by a couple of 3rds like you would for BIF.
the bird will have more detail instead of the background and the Chromic aberations should reduce too
