Used camera & lens website

I’ve moved to the site to a U.K. based server to reduce latency and such

Just some teething issues during the switch, dns has propagated now just speaking to support about getting it working again.

I hate it when the site is down :) but must stay calm

This site is making it far too easy to find things, and has cost me another £150 this week buying 40 year old gear I really dont need. :)

Incidentally, I've noticed an issue with the links the site provides to items at Ffordes, e.g.:

By default, this returns an expired certificate error like NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID with most browsers. It can be fixed by linking to the www.ffordes.com subdomain, e.g.:

Thanks! I will take a look at that

Thanks for fixing! Another minor issue - MPB doesn't seem to show up in the Retailer field, e.g. in this search:

it shows for me, I think this was mentioned back in the thread and it was adblock or something - could it be that?

Sorry, I'd missed that. I've just tested it without uBlock Origin and it's fine. The MPB Retailer link is via prf.hn, which uBlock has decided to block (it doesn't seem to mind the awin1.com links used for Wex, and of course the direct links to most other retailers are OK).

Glad it came up before :D as it'd be a pain to work out hah

Ok I finished adding retailers

Three did not make the cut

peterloy - website is made of nested tables within nested tables without any class/ids to help navigate it programmatically
commercialcameras - favours dumping new stock on home page instead of updating used page, too much inconsistency
soperfectimages - pages take 15 seconds to load, multiplied by perhaps 40 categories with multiple pages - that's a lot of processing time, I may reconsider.

Future considerations

amazon warehouse - still waiting on API access
ebay - might have a look at this next..

Here are all the other companies I added so far, let me know if I've missed any you'd like me to add.

Our website has been completely redesigned since the above was posted.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for pointing this out. Our previous website didn’t use cookies so this is new to me. I contacted the company we used to design the website and they have advised that in order to have an ‘opt out’ function they need to use a third-party add-on (‘utilises the Usercentrics platform’) for which we would have to pay a set up charge and a monthly subscription, on top of the monthly fee we already pay. As we don’t use the cookie information in any way, I’m wondering if we could remove cookies altogether. From the site visitor’s point of view leaving the website as it is, removing cookies altogether or adding the opt out option, would make no difference, because we don’t use the information, but of course they don’t know that.

I would be very grateful if you could DM or email me if you have a solution. Unfortunately. my expertise (if that’s not too strong a word) is in cameras and lenses and not in website design.

Peter

On usedlens there isn’t a cookie accept notice at all because I don’t use any non essential cookies

this means no third body embeds such as Facebook or google analytics

I also imagine they can implement solutions which don’t require subscription, sounds like it’s an easy way for them to flick a switch and make money

For the info of TP users, we are allowing Peter to quote his website url above because it is germane to the topic being discussed and clearly not intended to advertise his site. I have however removed the hyperlink to make that clear. Should you (@PLOY wish to advertise the site and your business on talkphotography.co.uk, I'd be happy to discuss rates with you via PM or email

You can inform yourself about the basics of the legal side of things from these two websites...

The first explains the basics of the General Data Protection Regulation and the second is how the UK has implemented that in the Data Protection Act.

You don't need to use cookies, they're a convenience feature and/or a marketing tool.

Thanks Andrew, much appreciated. I'll look into it further.
