What am I supposed to do, Lie ?

Lie, change the subject, obfuscate, find a positive.

They've bought something, they're pleased with it, they want your approval as someone who has 'some interest'.

What can you or they possibly gain from you telling them the photo is garbage?

If they ask you for critique of their work, go ahead with the s*** sandwich, that will help them improve.

Sometimes it is better to be kind than right.

I am learning pretty quick I think, in the pub the other day while giving birthday presents out to a relative, I was asked by someone what they thought of a little pocket Camera they had bought for them, as they knew I am into camera's. I won't bother naming the Camera, but I will say it is probably one of the poorest quality Camera's out there, and probably nowhere near as good as a mobile phone! I really wanted to say what a load of c**p, but she was looking at me for approval. Obviously I knew who the Camera was for, and I knew they would never use it, and would simply throw it to the back of the cupboard to never be seen again. So with that in mind I simply said it's ideal for them, as I knew they would not have wasted a lot of money on an unwanted present!

Later on the missus said how relieved she was, as she thought I was going to say what a load of c**p, and upset the woman who was giving the present :)

I guess the easiest is to ask if they are pleased with them and then say 'wonderful' when they say 'yes'. That way you've avoided the question whilst emitting positive vibes.

I don't seem to get an issue with this one - people start by saying 'I'm sure you wouldn't be satisfied with this (P&S) camera, but do you think it will suit me ok?' - I then can answer in the context of their needs without fear!

When I have bought things I do ask others what do you think, if my mates or friends say it's no good you should have gotten this one, or that one. I will be pleased that they told me the truth, then hopefully a can change it for a better/ more suitable item. That does not happen much now, as I tend to ask friends relatives etc before I purchase an item or service.

True, and I would still offer advice in the context of their needs. I don't know much about P&S cameras but often recommend Lumix models from the positive experiences of family and friends.
