Darkslinger's 52 Week Challenge - 2023

A nice set Bill - and you've chosen the right one :)

Pretty: fits the bill. I'm with you on the mono shot though.
Window: The woman's face adds to the shot for me. It could tell a story.

Nice set of reflections Bill. We normally try so hard to not get reflections in windows, this is a good reversal of that!

Good set Bill, think you’ve picked the right one for the theme. The woman in the corner adds a lot to the picture, makes me think of a horror film/ someone watching or stalking  :$ :)

I like the wider shot of the xylophonist for the movement you;ve caught in the beaters, and the concentration.

ANother great set for windows, love the show of your progression through the time spent shooting. Agree the round light, and the chap with the dog, and the receding line of stalls works well, and then you get the pop of the lasy in the corner looking out. I know you didn't plan it, but you got it!

Thanks Helen, yeah it was the woman in the window that clinched it for me.

Thanks Simon, I like to use reflections to create images that are different.

Thanks Keith, just need a shower scene to complete the set :D
Lots you could have picked this week.

Strong set.
Thanks Kell!

Thanks Graham, sometimes is just about the right time and the right place...

Week #31 - Abandoned

I was out at the North 40 off-leash park on Sunday. Lots of remnants of building from the decommissioned and abandoned military base, like this one:

Aug 07-23 - smaller (2 of 4).jpg

And then there is our dog (found abandoned in a field in California before we got her) sitting beside another remnant of an abandoned building:

Aug 07-23 - smaller (1 of 4).jpg

But this is the old abandoned building that I really wanted to shoot. I would have been better on a dark and stormy night:

I really like all the windows shots, but think you definiately choose the best one.
Abandoned works well in mono, would have done for windows too :)

Week #33 - Machine(s)

Started on my walkabout and saw this in a window of a comic shop:

Aug 19-23 (1 of 1)-11.jpg

And I thought from there that, rather than looking for machines themselves, I'd look for representations of machines. I found these (also at local shops):

Aug 19-23 (1 of 1)-9.jpgAug 19-23 (1 of 1)-10.jpg

But I ended up shooting this one and really liked how it turned out looking like a double exposure with a part of a machine in one section of the image and a reflection of a machine in another:

Superb set - the chosen one is fabulous! I can see that on a big canvas somewhere!

Unusual shot for machine, I like it lots. Shame the car is a modern one, you need to keep going back till an old one parks in that place :D

A good catch up, with some good shots. I think your chosen images were worthy winners.
Thanks Paul

Like your chosen shot, lots of things to look at in it
Thank you Keith

Thanks for the kind words Dave.

Your chosen shot is excellent.

My only criticism is that I don't like the front of those Lexus cars. (Lexii? Luexusses?)

But I recognise that's an entirely personal opinion and doesn't detract from the shot.
LOL, I would go with Lexii...

Abandoned and Machines both nice sets as usual Bill!
Thanks you Simon.

Not a bad idea Pete. I might do that.

Week #34 - Circle(s)
I took these shots in the right week time just seemed to get away from me when it came to posting...

I started finding some random shots like this one:

Circles (1 of 1)-2.JPG

But then I started seeing all of the round tables on the street in front of restaurants and other random places:

Circles (1 of 1)-7.JPGCircles (3 of 4).JPGCircles (1 of 1)-8.JPGCircles (1 of 2).JPG

So that's what I went with...

Week #35 - Snapper's Choice + Tech

I wasn't too motivated but managed to take some closeups that I was happy with and, managed to upload them in time!

Circles - I like your chosen image, but I think the red one has more impact.

Snapper's Choice - Beautiful close-ups and your chosen one is lovely.

^^^^ That

Chosen leaf is fantabadoozy :)

Good shots Bill but agree with the other votes for the red chairs and table - the red looks good against the dark BG.
Nice detail and light on the leaf

Circles, I rather like the colour pop with the red chairs and tables.
Snappers. I love this.. the colour and texture are beautiful.

I really like the Circles shot. I think the first one could work at night maybe where those lightwells tend to be lit from below. Although I say that because I've thought that myself - yet never managed to capture anything interesting when I've tried.

All the leaf shots are great - hard time choosing between them.

Thanks Paul, it was a toss-up for the street shot but I'm a sucker for shots of food trucks/trailers

Thanks Dave.

Your chosen image for circles is a cracker love it, snappers is good.
Thank you Dave

Nice shots Bill. I love the colour image of the fern.
Thanks Simon, yes, I almost chose that one for the main thread.

LOL, seems like I should have gone red with my main Circles shot...

Thanks Kell, the circle shot what coming out of a restaurant right after reading what the theme was. Kind of the first thing that caught my eye.

Week #36 - Urban + Tech

Kind of right up my alley given my preference to wander around the city. I found myself on the other side of downtown in False Creek while I waited for my wife to have some minor day surgery done so these are all from that walkabout.

I came across this art installation and noticed the little re-bar sculpture of the family looking at it and thought that it would make an interesting composition:
Sep 07-23 (1 of 1)-6.JPG

This was right by the Cambie Street bridge:
smaller (1 of 1).JPG

As I walked towards the inner harbour the light was really good so I took this shot of the boats, looking towards downtown (that's an off-leash dog park in the foreground):
Sep 07-23 (1 of 1)-13.JPG

A little further along the water is an urban community garden:

Sep 07-23 (1 of 1)-19.JPGSep 07-23 (1 of 1)-17.JPG

And I finally arrived at Granville Island where there are a number of artisan shops in residence. This is actually two shots. One exposed for the exterior and one exposed for the, very shadowed, interior. Combined in Photoshop as a 2-shot HDR.
Sep 07-23 (1 of 1)-27.JPG

Thanks Paul, it wasn't my first choice but I figured I could use it to get the Tech part of the challenge in.

Nice set of images there, some really good compositions and PP work. I like the one you've chosen for the theme (has a similar ring to my one too).

Nice mixed set of urban stuff Bill :)

Nice set there bill. Your chosen shot and some others definitely fits urban theme, like the HDR shot.

Top work Bill.

I think the reflected modern car in the window with the old speedo stuck on 75mph is brilliant.

The red tables pop even in the dull rain. Looks like a selective colour effect, (which I think it might be a little, but very subtlely done.

I'd be really happy with the first of the fern shots, perfect focus, sufficient DOF and smooth BG.

I also like the stick men - looking like little aliens watching a rocket jet off somewhere!

Lovely set and the image you chose has real depth with the broken chair and debris, and the distant cars parked under the bridge. Nice one.

Thanks Keith, I was really pleased with how the HDR shot came out. I might have chosen it as the main shot if it weren't for the tech.

Very cool set of images for Urban.
Thanks Dave.

Lovely set of images - I think my fave is the HDR. But your chosen one works well to tick off the tech.
Thanks Kell, I don't disagree.

I like all of these images, but the first one is my favourite, great capture (imo)
Thanks Adam, I originally was only shooting the rocketship until I saw the little rebar family.

Thanks for your kind words Graham, I always like hearing your comments (good or bad :D ).
