High-end bridge cameras: Sony RX10, Panasonic FZ1000 etc

I can see Shrek having a "tricky" in that second one!

Yes agreed! It's not perfect by any means but a great all-rounder nonetheless

They certainly have a place. On our recent road trip in France it was handy to have a Jack of All Trades camera with me. Whether is snapping scenes while exploring the old narrow streets or zooming out to the far end of the lens when needed it could all be done with flexible RAW images.

I have owned several bridge cameras in my time. All have (ultimately) disappointed. The 1" sensor type are pretty good and the pricey ones can be quite pleasing. But they can be bulky and heavy even with the small sensor.

Obviously not for you then Cara. Personally I don’t think they will be around much longer as there hasn’t been any new development in them for years now. On a plus I’m no longer chasing newer upgraded models.

It's amazing what you have squeezed out of that sensor and camera Mike you don't need anything else it seems. I suffer the same GAS ,
I’m so over giving my cash over to camera companies for a little improvement if any. The draw of getting the very best from my older gear outstrips the gas.

Compared to an APS-C system covering the same focal lengths, the RX-10 (mine's a iii rather than a iv) is a lightweight. Ultimate IQ might not be right up there but is good enough for A3+ prints (with no cropping). Gives me space in my hand luggage for a couple more changes of clothes when we go on holiday.

Bulky and heavy compared to what? I have a Nikon d7100 in aps-c format with a 24-120 lens. It is at least as bulky and heavy as the V-LUX , probably more. The V-LUX has a 400mm reach so if you add another lens to the Nikon outfit it will be far more bulky and heavy. OK, you could put a superzoom on the aps-c camera, but that would still take it beyond the bulk and weight of the V-LUX. Granted it can never match a larger format sensor, but image libraries such as Alamy will accept images from it.

When we fly abroad it will be the camera that I take with me.
