Returning to the fold.

He thought that amateur photographers were not photographers. His website seemed to disappear some years ago, but haven't looked recently.
Website still blank.

I'm not sure it was amateurs as a category he thought weren't 'proper' photographers, more the sort of hobbyists who are obsessed with gear and/or making perfect, pretty pictures that look the same as everyone else's.

Good point. That side of it was very clear......................................

"Stupid amateur photographers. I have no idea why they get so upset about the "view". They all end up taking exactly the same uninspired, unoriginal photo any way... just to stick it on Flickr along with the other identical photos and think they're creative."

It was hard to see what he was really thinking, but impression build, maybe the wrong ones :)

His commercial photography was good

Ah! such is my memory:LOL:
But as for his Flickr.....it looks like the last uploads were in 2013
Ah didn’t check the dates as he’s responded to some of my Flickr photos over the past few months and from time to time since his departure from TP.

Pretty sure he was the ex Para Reg lad I was thinking about earlier, didn't he end up as a gamekeeper?

Think his call sign was Les321?

GC

If this is the Les I mentioned I remember commentating on his pictures which IMHO were never less than excellent. That was the only interaction I had with him and I was surprised to get a message from him saying that he was leaving the forum after a dispute. I was surprised he'd noticed me enough to think of sending me a message and I was surprised that he'd been involved in any sort of dispute as I'd never seen him involved in anything contentious at all.

Here's hoping he returns and graces us with his excellent photography again.

I agree with what's already been said. I think it's a great shame when people feel they can no longer post.

It was a dispute that led to a ban.

Has Hacker been mentioned yet - for a long time I thought his avatar was real, and still to this day I am not sure...

not many of the ex-staff regularly frequent this place - i think it's often all the hassle from keeping Hot Topics and (formerly at least) the Classifieds from becoming a complete bearpit...

I certainly have an understanding, perhaps even some sympathy with that point of view

He gave me some very sound advice about a project I was embarking upon, which saved me going down a couple of blind alleys. While it did not happen often, I enjoyed the work of his own that he posted.

The attitudes and opinions that some people trot out can be certainly quite revealing ...

One of the problems with running a site like this is that when the conversation turns away from photography then people's opinions can come out. Often there will be some strong views, especially among creative types, that aren't suitable to be aired in public. When I've read about some very highly respected photographers personal lives, I've discovered they were sometimes quite unpleasant people.

So there's a difficult path to walk: do you ban off-topic conversation - only to find people still talk about it anyway and get themselves banned - or do you permit it, and then ban those who express the unthinkable. People still haven't learned to put the same filter on their fingers that they are usually forced to use on their mouth.

I think it's more to do with being able say things with some amount of anonymity that gives into such behaviour.

You may be right, but in the case of some mentioned here that got banned for the content of their post, they were very clearly identified through name, personal website etc.

Many a tinpot emperor is driven by testosterone, and who knows whether or when that has been also been mobilised by a few drinks? Or perhaps in some cases, deep down, they are unhappy or unsatisfied with their lives? :(

Cant remember her name but going to 2011-2012 ish, would have a female tog who posted a lot about running a photography business, who I took a lot from. Anyone else remember her?

He sold all his camera gear and dedicated his life to cycling. Very active on Strava these days

I also wish Sir SR had remained a bit longer - Shaheed's portraits were always so good.
I know Shaheed well his wife and I worked together for many years.
Heks still doing some photography but not as much due to family life and a very busy job.

Im sure he may go back to it in the future as he certainly had an eye for portraiture.
