Simon's 52 in 2023

My family all come from the Roth Park area, I used to visit my Great Grandad there in the 70,s he worked on the docks from about 1910 and used to take me down there with my cousins in the 1970s. My Grandad was injured building Cardiff hospital! I must visit again to see what its like.
You'd notice a massive change all over the city Roger, but mostly for the better. the docks area - now ”Mermaid Quay” is really quite nice, and of course the whole of the Cardiff bay, now a freshwater lake protected by the barrage.

Definitely the colour version, draws the eye in to an interesting combination of architecture past the cliff face. The big wheel peeking out from the cliff face works well

Thanks Alan. There’s some great buildings in the Bay area. I didn’t notice the wheel until I looked at the shot after I took it, but yes, it’s great to see it peeking out! Not quite the Cardiff “Eye”!

A couple of great shots Simon, I think that I like the Penarth Pier shots but I'm torn between the colour and b&w.

Interesting description of an area I don't know at all. However, I do like to last image - mono minimalism.

I was there Tuesday Simon, Got the bus into Cardiff wandered around and then walked into Penarth over the barrage. The old dock offices were open so I had a quick look in there, and snapped a couple of Goldfinches sitting on the fence.

It's the colour one for me too, nicely done and fits the theme perfectly.

Thanks Helen - I know you like a mono!

Cheers John. The barrage is a regular haunt for me.
Unfortunately our trip to Flatholm has been cancelled - apparently the weather tomorrow is coming from the wrong place! Will re book though. Be a fascinating trip.

Good set Simon.
To me your third shot fits the theme the best, but the pier shot comes with a great story.

Week 19 - Fragile

Yikes - Monday already, busy tomorrow, not sure about Wednesday so better get Week 19 in. This weeks shows fragile new life with Cannada Geese goslings aplenty at Lydney lake in the Forest of Dean. There were more adults around, so these don't all belong to the pair you can see (thankfully for them) but it made me smile to see a whole bunch of them - it was like a golfing nursery! The one adult you can see was getting a little feisty as it clearly though I was too close - I wasn't really that close.

Awwww likkle gooses :)

Nice one.

Nicely done, nice that there's a bit of sunlight coming through the trees. The light really shows the colour of the little ones.

Nice scene with the geese, I find them quite scary sometimes.

Nice image - definitely think the inclusion of the lifted wing speaks to the parent in me.

I can imagine it saying "Will you all, please just get over there and away from the dude with the camera"

Thanks all. It was quite an opportune shot. Been on the golf course today and there are loads more - so fab to see!

Aww, they're so cute. I definitely wouldn't get too close with those minders!

Good shot Simon, don't know how fragile they are, speaking as someone who's been chased more than once by irate parents...

Nice shot, I like Canadian Geese but never seen the goslings before.

Week 20 - Robust

Blimey, another week racing by and another where I've had limited time and opportunity, but nevertheless here are a couple of offerings

Both taken at the delightful Dewstow Gardens and Grottoes in Caerwent, not far from Chepstow. The fist is my chosen shot - chosen because it fits the bill perfectly. A stone bird house. That's not going to fall over in the wind or rot away in a hurry.

The second is more of a shoe horn. The grottoes (several subterranean) in the aformentioned Dewstow Gardens were originally excavated and built by landscapers Pulham & Sons back in the last 1890's. The were filled in during the 40's when the estate fell into disrepair and the land covered for pasture, before being rediscovered in the noughts. The grottoes have been re-excavated and they and the grounds have undergone extensive renovation, showing that they were certainly robust enough to survive being filled in. Sadly there's no real history as to why they were originally commissioned . They are a fascinating place to visit though if you're ever down this way.

A stone birdhouse well that is one very cool image, never seen a stone one before, the second image is is a beauty of a shot as well.
Cheers Dave. It’s one of those places where you wonder what the original owner had in his thoughts…….

That's one robust birdhouse for sure!

Two interesting pictures, good backstory on the grotto and never seen a stone bird house before, maybe someone was showing off when they decided to have that built, though well done to them as it will last.
It may well be my screen but could the shadows be lifted a bit on the bird house

Cheers Keith. Not your screen . It was dark under the trees. Quick edit to lift the shadows a bit - much beyond this and the detail goes as was iPhone shot.

A really interesting birdhouse Simon, a good choice for the theme. I like the shot with the "lifted" shadows.
