The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Who reckon @JJ! will come home with a nice new SOOOONNNNYYYYY!!!

You taking your nikon stuff with you?

Well I just dont know what to do..

The Camera will be a nice gain as it will have stuff I want... such as Live View.. EVF... IBIS.... Eye AF

70-200 F4 will be find for me well I bloody hope so. As I just looked at some of the images I taken with my current 70-200 and a few are at 2.8 at the zoo must of been a dull day but hope to get away with it.

Kit lens there mix views on this from several places but with he AF ability of the A7iii will it be any good but must if Sony pairing them as a kit?

50mm 1.8 I was all set on to it but seem a bit put off.

I cant really afford any other lens just yet maybe in the summer if needed
50mm is fine

Doubt it. I got trade in prices from them and they were way off WEX prices.

Take in the WEX quote I bet you they match it while you there and then if no messing about that how I do it..

put paper on counter match that I have this and that deal done

We shall see! The Samyang lens is also now on my shopping list!

Just a heads up...
prospective Sony A7 III buyers should test the body our in low-light to see if it meets their needs, there has been a report of it struggling in low-light which is similar to the A7R III. :)

Someone already did a comprehensive AF report and said it seemed the same as the A9

From another forum...... but looks like a one off. Perhaps user error.

Field test did not go nearly so well. It was very dark, a bar, with the 70-200 GM, at 2.8, struggled quite frequently, quite a lot of hunting, in both AFS and AFC, AF area - centre. Wasn't an easy shoot. The lack of IR assist really seems to hurt these Sonys for low light. I know the new flash has an LED assist solution, but that is going to be much more distracting for the subject, making candid's harder. And the flash is incredibly expensive.

I'm considering switching to primes, giving it another stop of light, shooting f2 or wider. If anyone is regularly shooting dark events on Sony bodies, tips very welcome!

Ohh so some true comments coming along.

@1.4 will he test low light pls

My a9 is a beast in near darkness and there was a review by a bloke called Paul and another famous YouTube and his a9 nailed focus in near dark better than his d5. Proof on the video he did.

That was one of if not the best review from the A9

Question is, can the Sony A7 III focus as good/quick/track considering the A9 performs 60 AF/AE calculations per second and the A7 III does not ? :D

I've been following this over on DPR (https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/60890104), roughly they're saying when it's set to a small aperture and AFC regardless of the live view setting on or off it will focus open then remain stopped down, which causes focusing problems because it's effectively too dark for the camera.

So is that intended behaviour or is the setting only relevant when you're in AFS?

In that thread there's reports of different lenses acting differently, not sure if that's accurate or user error though.

Lol I've banged on about that for years... I here and in dp

Oh no.... not this again.... the Sony A9 doesn't do this does it?

There's a simple test, stop the aperture down to F16 then watch the front of the lens when you CAF. If you see the aperture stop down when it's focusing, and stay stopped down throughout, then yes it does the same thing and will cause issues in low light as the camera will be trying to lock focus with a lot less light coming in.

Nope it's fixed on both the A9 and a7r3. Else I would have thrown the cameras in the bin for studio work

Seems odd to be back in place on the A7iii if it was resolved in firmware on the other 2 bodies? As it's one user experience, it's as likely something else they had enabled possibly?

To test I will need to get the Sony A9 out from hibernation, and we can't have that now can we? :D lol

Ah go one rub it in lol

though you already had one?

BTW have you tested low light with the A7iii pls
Yeah I had one before and sent it back as the autofocus noise was audible. This one is perfectly silent ! It will be used as a video lens too so that's why the original went back, it was razor sharp though!

It's not necessarily the sharpness that impressed me but rather the performance across the whole frame.

When I had DSLR's I thought that the Sigma 50mm f1.4 was excellent. I remember comparing it to my Canon 50mm f2.5 which at the time was thought by some to be Canon's sharpest 50mm and for me the Sigma matched or beat the Canon at every aperture the Canon could match. At the time I couldn't imagine ever wanting a better 50mm than the Sigma but the Sony 55mm is IMO on a different level if you're looking for performance across the frame.
