WBMT.....What baffled me today

I keep detailed home accounts on a spreadsheet, have done for years.
It’s interesting to see how much we have spent in various stores or how much on clothing or IT stuff. Plus the usual utilities etc.

I keep a running total and I check my credit card bill and bank account once a month and there's never been anything dodgy but it just surprised me that I'd spent so much on my card. It's not a problem, it just surprised me to see the total for the year, Oct 2023 to now.

I can't see any way I can cut down and some expenditure such as solicitors fees are unavoidable one off things and as we don't have children maybe there's no point cutting down anyway.

Absolutely right, we are careful but by the same token if we want something, we get it. No kids, one distant nephew we’ve not seen in over a decade, no pockets in a shroud ;)

Due to recent family issues I/we wont be leaving anything to local family. When Mrs WW arrives back from her travels we'll make wills but as everyone not local seems ok, and we have asked them, I suppose what we have and don't spend will be going to local charities.

One problem is that I was brought up to be careful with money and not to be excessive. It's a difficult mindset to get out of and also I find that I don't want much and neither does Mrs WW. I know not everyone is in a comfortable position.

With us, I’m the ‘spendthrift’, wifey is the saver so we kinda balance up the books!

A strange thing happened this morning. I was telling my wife that Biden is allocating the $6bn military aid for Ukraine before Trump takes office . Then, I told her that I hope he also gives Ukraine permission to use the long-range missiles to attack military targets deep inside Russia which he has ,so far, refused to do. I didn't say ATACMS as she wouldn't know what ATACMS are. Amazingly, Alexa activated with...."Long range missiles are weapons used to attack targets at distance". She then said that ... " ballistic missiles have the longest range being able to hit targets thousands of miles away on another continent before detonating"

How on earth did that happen ? We agree that I didn't say anything that remotely sounded like "Alexa" which you have to say to 'wake her up" before speaking to her.

Hmmm! I thought it had reported that Alexa is listening 100% of the time and perhaps with the increasing usage of AI ( even a Google search lists at the page top "AI" says ......) perhaps there are now trigger words such 'long range missiles'

I'm afraid I look at the war differently. I watched a thing on Youtube the other day and they said that the Russians are drafting 30,000 people a month into the military and they get two weeks training and that two weeks is apparently spent getting kitted out and travelling to the front. They're effectively civilians in uniform with an assault rifle and no real military training. On the street one day and two weeks later they're charging a Ukrainian position with a Russian gun at their backs. They're recruiting 30,000 a month and losing 1,000 to 1,200 a day. They didn't say what Ukrainian losses are but they're something less than that I guess and the Russians are reported as being happy with a kill rate of 12 Russians dying to every 1 Ukrainian. I forget who the clip quoted, some American military or analyst maybe, but whoever it was he refused to call the draftees "soldiers" and instead called them "people."

I think the effort has to be to get this to stop. That could involve getting Russia to the negotiating table by threatening to provide ever more money and weapons to the Ukraine, it may involve loosening restriction on use, it may involve getting Ukraine to the table by threatening to cut off supplies, something must be done to get meaningful peace talks with a real chance of achieving peace underway.

It's baffled me since I joined this forum......why folks say nice "landscape style" shot. Is it not a landscape shot? Genuinely baffles me...

What baffles me is why people start a post with "My Bold"

Sometimes when I want to respond to a particular section of someone's post, but I don't want to snip it and remove any context, I'll "bold" the part I'm replying to.

I can't remember if I've started the reply with "my bold", but I'm guessing this is why.

Well..I can tell you why I do it. When I 'quote' a post and want to address a particular aspect of it I highlight it in bold. It could be the next day after many posts so others just see the bold and think it was the in the original post.. Bold lettering is seen, sometimes, as 'shouting' at someone. I just want to make clear it's me that's highlighted it so it can be seen what exactly in the post I'm responding to. I suspect others do it for the same reason because I have seen it written. Having said that, it was only recently, I realised, having seen what others do, I could quote the whole post and then delete all but what I want to address. I did wonder how others did it. I'm the first to ackowlede that I struggle with computer-related stuff but not as bad as I used to be...Lol. I've got myself in a right mess sometimes and deleted my effort to respond to particular points then hit on the idea of 'bold'. I think I've got the measure of it now.

Also, when I copy/paste from an article that I've posted a link for I start with . 'From the article" in normal text and put that copy/paste in itallics. The reason being that one member replied with questions as if I had written the copy/paste. We sorted it out in an amicable way and I took his advice to make it clear what was written weren't my views .

It just helps to clear up potential misunderstandings but despite all efforts misunderstandings happen. It's the nature of online.

I was writing my reply, Graham and posted it then saw your response. So, yes..we do it for the same reason.

Two websites, selling same amount of beans, one for £3.69 citing £3.18/kg but the more the more expensive one at £3.75 is £2.26.kg.

Am I being incredibly thick?

No, BM Stores have poor mathematics :headbang:

The first one is actually £2.22 /Kg. The 2nd one is correct.

WordPress.

I've done a few sites before in the past within WordPress itself and it was pretty straightforward, but this is my first time doing it installed on my own server and it's just not playing ball. It's doing my box in and I want to destroy something. :dummy:

Own-brands are not as good as Heinz....noticeably so,too. Generally, you get what you pay for. It applies to Kellogs Bran Flakes, too.

I prefer the taste of some of the shop brand products and I do prefer ASDA beans to Heinz. I also prefer ASDA, Crucials and Daddies ketchup to Heinz. One shop brand thing I wont be buying again is ASDA's chocolate fingers as they are quite different to the Cadbury ones. I only bought them because they were amazingly out of the standard Cadbury fingers and only had flavoured ones and I couldn't be bothered going to Tesco for just one thing. I will next time.

Shop branded products I do often buy.

Washing up liquid.
Ketchup.
Baked beans.
Potato crisps.
Butter, but only sometimes, depending on what's on the shelf at what price.
Washing powder.
Mouth wash.

I think that's it.

I add Worcestershire sauce to Lidl beans, yummy (y)

Worcestershire sauce is something I've never knowingly tried but I was just thinking I should the other day. I'll get some next time I'm shopping. I was thinking of putting it in a cheese and tomato sandwich to start with.

Someone on here suggested to me that Lidl's own brand chocolate ice cream,..including white chocolate, was as good as Magnum which I used to buy and still do but only when they are on offer...so I bought a box. There's no comparison in quality. I mentioned it becaue the cost of the three-choc-ice box is now more than the previous four ices box.

Re other products..yes, own brand can be as good. I buy Sainsburys ketchup..much more tomatoey..is that a real word..? than Heinz and is Which ? recommended .

Items, such as washing up liquid can be substituted for branded products. What I do is to buy several of the branded items when they come on offer which keeps us going until the next offer by the brand.

Yes, we only buy Lidls own brand ‘Magnum’, almost exactly the same as the branded ones. We shop in Lidls before going anywhere else.

Oh I thought of something else shop branded I buy... deodorant, shower gel and shaving gel. I stopped buying Gillette when they made that contentious ad a few years back. Just in case anyone missed it, I think it was the most complained about ad ever with the most negative response on YouTube.

Llee & Perrins is always added to baked beans. It's the law.... ;)

I'll add it to the list. I can see I'm going to have a collection of little bottles. At the mo all I have is Tabasco,
Don't forget the soy sauce....

Both kinds...
