F&C meet up 18th May 2024

Thanks Chris, I've got a load of other things on my mind right now, happy for people to suggest things, I was thinking of having a few meeting points throughout the day and people could go off in groups or individually in-between. Happy for suggestions and I'll give it more thought after Easter.

Please indicate interest though

Wish I could join guys, would be interested to meet you. But I live in Belfast and with a two month old baby will be difficult to leave home.
Would be nice to share pictures after the meet up for the rest that Can’t be there

A few meet ups throughout the day sounds good to me.

Reconfirming I'm attending. Thanks @sirch , firming up plans after Easter seems sensible.

18th May still looking good for me. As long as I can get there in the day and back, I'm good.

I don't think that I can be around for this one because we're off to France shortly after and need that weekend to prepare.

I am afraid that I will not be able to attend, I had major head and neck Cancer surgery in December which did not go according to plan.

Since leaving Hospital I have started treatment ( chemotherapy ) and I have also undergone procedures for internal bleeding.

The medical advice is not to go. Sorry.

I hope you all have a great time.

Really sorry to hear that Richard, it must be a worrying time for you. This is the time to follow doctor's advice, and I'm sure there will be other meets in the future.

All the best meantime, Peter

Also sad to hear that Richard. I hope that the bleeding stops and you recover soon. I know that chemotherapy can be tough. :(

Hello all,

Just to let you all know on the recovery side of things, after leaving hospital the cancer prognosis was that my situation is terminal with a timeframe of 8 months to two years.

Therefore all my treatment is palliative

I felt it would be better if all the facts were in the picture.

I will stay as a contributing member on the site that I really love. You can PM me on any subject me should you wish.

Rich.

Sad to hear this. Let me know if I can help in any way.

Ah, that's sad news indeed Rich.

Sorry to hear you've been going through the wars Richard, I wish you a speedy recovery.

Its less than a month away so I guess we need to start firming up some plans. I was thinking that we could meet in Castleton, say the visitor centre at 10:30 on Saturday and then make plans based on the weather and what people want to do and may be aim to meet again later in the day? I'll be staying over in my van and around on Sunday too.

Sounds like a plan!

So sorry to hear this. Take this time to just enjoy yourself and do what you want to do. Thinking of you

Is there enough in Castleton to just all park at the visitor centre and just wander in Castleton for much of the day?
Depends a bit on how far people want to walk, but probably not in the village itself, there is Peveril Castle - https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/peveril-castle/ and Peak Cavern. Not far away is Mam Tor and Winnats Pass. There is also Cave Dale https://www.peakdistrict.org/cave-dale-walk/

As you said Lady Bower is only a short drive away

I've been to Castleton many times over the years. I'd find enough to photograph in the village and the immediate surroundings as @sirch suggests. It's all in walking distance but any folks with mobility issues may find some of them a challenge.

I'm happy to be Castleton based for the day as @srichards mentions.

It's worth remembering, especially if it's a sunny day, car parking at Castleton will fill up quickly.

Parking at Ladybower is something of a pain too on busy days.

Going the opposite direction down the Hope Valley, you've got Padley Gorge at Grindleford, or a load of gritstone edges (Stanage, Curbar, Frogatt and others). Chatsworth House a little further down too. Those are all a car ride away though, not really walking distance (unless you fancy a big hike).

Beyond meeting up at Castleton at 10.30 on the Saturday I don't think anyone knows what is happening. :)

Any details on what’s happening with this please?

In the absence of any better ideas, I think Chris' suggestion sounds good.

Both Peveril Castle and Cave Dale seem to be good wandering opportunities and it would be good to not have to keep running around in the car & hunting for parking places.

As this is more of a meet-up, I'd suggest a leisurely camera stroll (Cave Dale?) before lunch, followed by a lengthy "meet up" in a local eatery with a long lunch, followed by an afternoon wander somewhere else (Peveril Castle?) and maybe a meal before heading home? No - I'm not a hobbit. And this is just a stake in the ground for someone to come up with something better. I don't know the area at all.

I've never been to Ladybower and may well hit it up on the way home if there's the opportunity.

That's my tuppence!

Edit: Do we have any idea of numbers?

It's definitely better to pick one good location to park up in for the duration.

There is somewhere called the Bay Tree tearoom in Castleton that do take away so there's always the option of finding a patch of grass to sit on if the hostelries are heaving.

Let's meet at Castleton visitor centre at 10.30 on Saturday. It's an easy place for folk to find and if there are no parking spaces in the centre car park by 10:30 there is other parking near by. It's also got plenty of places for coffee and lunch. If we are done with Castleton by mid afternoon we could move on to Curbar or some where.
