Nikon D750 & D780

I only do up to 20 in LR. Using the 35mm art and nailing focus is sharp enough for me.

I use 40 and a mask value of 70 which is a basic sharpen. For outputting to web then I run the folder through PS as it’s far better for sharpening. Only use high pass sharpening for specific things and very rarely. Just find that if you’re using todays quality lenses you shouldn’t need too much sharpening and it can start to look too ‘digital.’

How do you sharpen in PS? I've never really got to grips with sharpening in PS  :$

Joking aside, it depends on the look and output you're processing for. I don't always use 50 sharpening, like I said it was just a crude setting I suggested (y)

TBH I don't like images which are too sharp and punchy. They can look kinda fake to my eyes. The clarity slider is the Devil's work IMO! :D

I rarely touch clarity unless I doing an extreme mono, clarity slider can soon make images look CGI ;)

I've just always used the high pass filter way.

I have a one click record option set up for it. Then you just brush away the areas you don't want sharpened. So like on portraits I mainly just add some to the eyes and adjust the opacity to the layer then merge and save. Someone did post a you tube video on here once that's how I did it all.

I really need to get to grips with the editing malarky!

What do you mean by the one click record option? Do you duplicate the layer prior to making adjustments?

Sorry my terminology is shocking.

You can record actions so I have the high pass as I've named it.
So it does the following
Makes a duplicate layer
Applies the high pass filter
Creates a layer mask all at the click of a button.

For web I have an action that is USM based (low threshold, high sharpen value) but for certain things I’ll use smart sharpen.

Clarity is definitely hardly ever used, never above 15, mostly zero.

Contrast is also something that should be used sparingly but I tend to use as a micro adjustment. Most tone is done through the tone curve.

Ooh how do you record an action, that'd save me so much time?

Interesting. What do you mean by you add contrast as a micro adjustment?

Most macro contrast boosts tend to be via the tone curve or a combination of the black and white points so the contrast slider tends to be a micro adjustment if at all.

Recording an action is super easy. Open the actions pallet, click the top right tab and select ‘new action.’ Hit the record button at the bottom, do your thing and hit stop at the bottom. Name it what you want and you’re done. Actions are an important workflow enhancement.

What he said @snerkler

Great, thanks for that much appreciated.

I still don't know what you mean by Macro adjustment though  :$ Do you mean you just do tiny adjustments, or 'brushed' in adjustments rather than global, or something else?

Please post it on here. This is one of the most useful pages I have read on here for a while.

Cracking action shots! What focussing method are you using for the shots of the dog running towards you? I have never quite got the hang of getting things repeatably sharp when coming straight toward me.
Thanks.

Thanks very much!

I was using CAF, fast burst and switched between single spot and 9 point.

Other important factors were the SS (pretty much all 1000/s or higher, which as a result usually means a higher ISO. Aperture, think most were between F2.8 and F3.5. Too low and it’s really hard to get anything in focus. Not all shots were in focus and I’m sure @snerkler and @JJ! are better at that than me, they could probably tell you more!

Edit: Also I have started using back button focus, I find that I prefer it.

Cheers

Not tried dogs yet! But they are harder than horses lol!

Nice, may I ask how much it was?

Slightly under £600 on ebay with postage included. Seems about the going rate. Was from a guy that has gone to an A7R3 and originally from Jessops.

Really good condition, boxed etc. Couple of tiny dust specs in the front element but that's it, they are only visible in harsh light so not too fussed, pretty inevitable with zoom lenses anyway.

Thank you Tom, I have the old 70-210f4 and always have the itch to upgrade to a 70-200 but don't use the long zoom much so keep telling myself don't need one :(

In case you don't wander over to the Sports section, here's a couple of photos of hurdlers from today's Upper Fraser Valley Track and Field Championships that began today. Weather had been warm/hot and then cold/rainy; fortunately today was sunny with tomorrow as well.

Just an update on my Pixel T6 Triggers.
Yes its the BBF that is causing them to not want to AF the lens when in most modes.
Obvs, If I change it back to the normal focus button they will work fine.

Well at least you have a solution then! Does it effect anything if you change AF modes too? Say back to single from continuous?

Tbh, I don't think so but I'm not 100% sure.
But yes, it's nice to know how to correct it if I need to.

My new toy has arrived [emoji3] Just had a quick 5 with it and first impressions are good!

@Eloise is right, it’s a proper brick!
Sorry I've not been following the thread closely, what new toy is that?

So literally 5 minutes out the back to see how it feels - I'm impressed out of the box. I'll look at MA tomorrow, but seems fine. All wide open, obvs. I mean, this lens ain't going to get used any other way Looking forward to a bluebell shoot at the weekend! Quick dirty edits.
