We're looking at £16-1700 for the D300s and 18-200 lens leaving 'not a lot' for the wheelchair accessories and camera mounts...

That's before any possible trader discounts however...:naughty:

Any chance of keeping a running total on the first post??

I know one of the advertisers has today spoken about talking to manfrotto regarding the magic arm, I also sent them an email last night. Also waiting for a senior rep to get in touch ;)

Thought it was a D5000 due to the screen? have we change it again? :)

I'm only a poor man but I have sent you a wee donation Julian (via Rob) and I can't wait to see your face when you get the new stuff! All the best with the future mate :)

Done...

...and I think that's still my preferred option as it gives a lot of leeway for optional extras, flash kit, accessories and a day out to play with it all, petrol-money and a nice dinner for Mrs Wheels and some cake for the Wheelies...

But it's your money, we take a vote and go with the majority decision - I'm just facilitating this...

Right now it'll be tight if we go the D300s route...we'll have to keep this open for another week and that's another week without a camera...

(y) Just sent my donation by PP

All the best "Wheels".

For everyone else.....

We could probably get by with the D5000 but I am looking at the Ideal and working backwards.......

Ideal.

Two brackets fabricated giving him a tripod top mount to the right of his chair and to the left a screen mount and a flash mounting bracket. If we can find someone on here who can do some fabrication then these should not be too difficult to make....

Then

D300s + remote (allows easy adjustments of all the settings etc which are in menus on lower models and means he can get the most from it)

Manfrotto 222 trigger head (allows him to adjust the rotation and elevation of the camera easily and it will just lock in place then)

18-200 lens (from far wide to telephoto without changing lenses)

flash + cable (to go to the bracket on the other side)

External screen + cable (to link in with the camera)

This is the ideal and we could swap the D300s for a D90 or D5000 if the most runs low....

OK I've spoken to Cowasaki and I'm convinced by his reasoning for the D300s over the D5000.

What we need now is someone with knowledge of metal-fabrication to create a pair of brackets to mount an external screen on one arm of the chair and the camera on a tripod head on the other...

Like he says...^^^

Fantastic - if more is needed to get the best solution then please pass the hat round again and I will drop some more in. For me we have to follow Darren's recommendations

You keeping this open for the weekend, daughter coming round on Sunday and I'll get her to do a paypal for me (y)

Darren are these brackets removable? I mean not stuck to wheelchair all the time?

Like many others I've been truly touched by this - both Julian's story and the generosity of the TP members. The fact that so many can come together so quickly for a good cause restores a little faith in humankind. The fact that it's a virtual community - even more so. I've only recently joined TP but will be sticking around for ages - got to be one of the friendliest forums on the net. :D

I'm more than happy to contribute towards the cause and truly hope Julian that you get many years of enjoyment out of your new toy. Should we be short of funds to get you exactly what you want/need, then I'll be just as happy to chip in again. Truly a deserving cause.

Arkady - a huge hat's off to you for kick starting and running with this! (y) Contribution on it's way to you via PP Gift

Wheels tells me that there are accurate diagrams on the wheel chair manufacturers web site for measurements etc but roughly

right bracket would be:

35cm long 3cm square box section aluminium tube horizontally meating 25cm similar tube coming from the wheel fixing then a curved upright of the same material going to a flat plate with a screw sticking up out of it matching that that you get on a set of tripod legs.

left bracket would be:

Same as above but the upsection would be maybe 40-50cm with a vesa bracket on it and right at the top a strobo whatsit tripod attachment like those that FITP sells.

I can draw them later

If someone can send me a drawing/diagram, I pretty sure I can get that done

Spence
Oh, & I'll donate once I get on the P.c later(y)

Darren are these brackets removable? I mean not stuck to wheelchair all the time?

There are a couple of ways you could do it, all removable as well.

It really depends on the wheelchair and where they need to be fitted.

No I was going to spec them as clamping on the arm rest brackets and axle brackets so your arm rests still move. The arm rests are not strong enough or steady enough.

They absolutely need to be removable AND easily re-attached.

If you can get the brackets done that is a massive donation in itself! We also save in not buying the standard brackets. I will draw something out later but it will not be to scale yet. I might have to draw a rough diagram and then get accurate measurements later unless Wheels can give me a link to the wheel chair site......

I know you are all remarkable

my parents have read this and are deeply moved

I think a lot of people have been moved, myself and the Mrs especially, at your "thankyou video" from today. Your speech is getting much much better... (y) Keep up the battle.

Certainly, TP thread of the year!

I keep popping back to it every few minutes......... Just wondering how long until the money laundering Internet Terrorist police kick down Rob's door........

Joe at Redsnapper has an engineering workshop (his other business)
Maybe worth a call.

Re brackets and fabricating the bits an dbobs required for the adaptions. My wife works for the Carers Association and she has some contacts that might be worth approaching:
R.E.M.A.P. or REMAP - This is an organisation or charity made up of retired engineers who design, make, fabricate things for disabled folks. They do many adaptations for specific requirements, that kind of thing.
Find REMAP on 0121 475 6919 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting**************0121 475 6919******end_of_the_skype_highlighting or www.remap.org.uk

I am sure they can do anything that is required - many things off the shelf are not quite usable and these guys rework virtually anything. You need Wheels input for these adaptions, we can't even begin to think about what he needs, but if talks to these guys, they will do it exactly to suit.

I am sure the budget will stretch to whatever is required. There are often ways round things.(y)

By the way, Julian, when you get whatever it is that you decide upon....you do realise you are going to have to grow your hair, grow a beard and start wearing black, rock group T-shirts (Floyd, Led Zep, Genesis, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Hendrix Exp, ZZ Top...that kind of thing), otherwise the camera police will come round and change your Nikon for a lowly Canon.:D

(y) I only logged on to post a thread bitching about how pathetic a feature live view is and I've been trawling through this ever since. Jeez, thanks, Rob.

Seriously, well done everyone.

This thread should have the Carlsberg rating, for best thread ever.

I'm sure that whatever happens, Wheels will be up and taking pics soon, hopefully with an adapted bracket for his chair to steady the camera on.

Keep up the good work chaps, and chapesses, (if thats a word).

Dave

Ladies and gents...we just passed the £2k mark...

Running total is now £2002... (y)

I'll take a look at the sketches as well, and see if I can help.

I feel guilty about this when others are worse off. Including my wife and kids if it wasnt for what they have given me over the last 3 years and them doing with out things just for me that hurts.

You don't have anything to feel guilty about mate! I'm the worlds biggest cynic but this thread has almost moved me to tears..............because of your courage and because of the generosity of TP members (don't tell anyone I said that though - I've got an image to maintain)!!

I feel really good that am in a position to donate and am proud of having done so................I suspect that applies to just about everyone else who has done so as well:)

Rob..............you can be an arse sometimes...........but you're forgiven (for now)!!:D
